US bans offshore drilling as Deepwater Horizon slick hits land

US bans offshore drilling as Deepwater Horizon slick hits land - Times Online

The US today banned all new offshore drilling as crude oil from the sunken Deepwater Horizon rig began lapping at the shores of sensitive marshland at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

Speaking on US television, David Axelrod, a White House senior adviser, declared that no company would be allowed to proceed with exploration in new areas off the US coast until an investigation into the cause of the disaster had been completed.

He said: “No additional drilling has been authorised and none will until we find out what happened ... and whether there was something unique and preventable here.”
I strongly support off-shore drilling, but I think this is a good idea. If we are going to do it, we should do it as safely as possible.

So, you think this ban is the result of environmental wackoism?

Personally, I think exploding oil rigs are never a good thing, regardless of environmental considerations.

Predictable. Great way for The Obama to get back in the good graces of the green weenie lobby. I bet Chavez and King Abdullah are laughing their asses off right now ...

This is a prudent move. It shows intelligence has returned to the White House.

This is a good move. All rigs should have those auto cut offs and it will need to be researched.

When even conservatives are calling this a prudent move, maybe you think about the kneejerk partisanism you're displaying.

There's obviously a serious risk in the current design. They can, under the right circumstances, turn into a massive inferno and spill oil all over the place. We need to investigate the flaw and correct it. We wouldn'in t tolerate potential risk this large in an airliner or nuclear power plant, we shouldn't tolerate it in an oil rig.

Meanwhile, Russia and China, even Angola, will continue to drill in the Gulf of Mexico.

And given the potential for billions of dollars in lost revenue, they'd be wise to look into safety additions themselves.

They may or may not design their rigs in a way to make them explode.

    Besides, we haven't stopped drilling.
