US bans offshore drilling as Deepwater Horizon slick hits land

We can smell it. This is going to be horrible. :(

I can't believe it! First, they told us that it couldn't happen. Then they told us it wouldn't happen. And now it's happening …

wait, this was an "exploration rig"? :doh
Nope.

The article is confusing, by the way. One paragraph says exploration has been put on hold, while the next says drilling permits have been put on hold. It would be ridiculous to hold up exploration because of this.

This is a good move. All rigs should have those auto cut offs and it will need to be researched.

I knew you'd automatically dump on Obama and-

Wait, what?

Nope.

The rig was doing exploratory drilling about 50 miles off the coast of Louisiana.

I'm sorry but I can't help but be confused why no-one can definitively state what happened to this well. And why did Napolitano look so guilty making the announcment that they and EPA are going to interfere with the Coast Guard operations at the site. What I do know is that a huge number of wells with this same equipment have had no problems for 20 years.

I think that the probability of sabotage or terrorist attack is much more likely than a drill head explosion. They are right now trying to manually close the equipment that was supposed to stop this from happening and has been successful for over 20 years on hundreds of wells. It could have been anyone from groanpiece to an Iranian submarine attack. Weren't we pressing sanctions on Japan when they attacked Pearl?

Because it only happened ten days ago.

Somehow I think somebody in the Navy somewhere might have noticed it if a foreign submarine sailed right up to the US ... :doh

Unless mankind is perfect, oil spills will happen. It is inevitable. The more rigs there are the greater the probability.

I watched a little Hannity last night and could not believe my ears. He was actually blaming Obama for the mess.

Predictable. Great way for The Obama to get back in the good graces of the green weenie lobby. I bet Chavez and King Abdullah are laughing their asses off right now ...

I hate to rain on your whinefest, but this is a temporary halt, not permanent. It kinda makes sense to make sure this does not happen again, at least not the same way.

tens of thousands of great JOBS...

at A TIME LIKE THIS

how much more can we stand?

Hannity is a jackass always has been. I don't blame Obama, nor did I blame Bush during their term when a disaster had strike the gulf coast. Anyone who is blaming the President are idiots, or they are hacks plain, and simple. I think this is a good move, since we need to be safe while we do our drilling. We don't own all of the Gulf of Mexico Cuba does own some of the gulf around their waters. I amuse that is were china, and Russia are headed Erod.

Seems like abit of a knee jerk reaction to me.People die in all manner of jobs.

I see this as a prudent and responsible move. Until they figure out what happened, they shoudldn't be opening up new wells.

Hint: read the article. This bans new drilling during the investigation. Care to explain how that is "tens of thousands" of jobs?

because those new rigs would need workers

unbelievable

And there are enough new oil rigs that would account for "tens of thousands" of jobs in the next couple months? You can document that?

LOL!

there are related industries

hello

meanwhile, ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AGENCY director lisa jackson on EARTH DAY, which happened to fall on DAY TWO of the gulf catastrophe, wrote a thousand pretty words about visions and ideals with NARY A MENTION of what's ACTUALLY GOING ON

Lisa P. Jackson: It's the Sustainable Economy

utter ineptitude

So you have no documentation for your claim of "tens of thousands" of jobs. Where exactly did you pull that number out of?

it's all he could get

in grotesque juxtaposition, "In the days after the rig sank, U.S Coast Guard Rear Admiral Mary Landry said the government had all the assets it needed," reports the register

noaa says, "burning could have captured 95 percent of the oil as it spilled from the well."

"all hands on deck," he SAYS, "from day one," his MANTRA...

pathetic

So about those "tens of thousands" of jobs....

noaa says, "burning could have captured 95 percent of the oil as it spilled from the well."
c

Wrong. Burning would have only destroyed 30% at the most. This is light crude on rough seawater, not gasoline.
It's funny how the free market people scream for government to bail them out when things get out of hand.
