Likewise, the various safeties of the machines on deck were not designed to handle that volume or pressure of methane.

If the BOP deployed flawlessly, the rig would have still exploded and sank, only now we wouldn't have a spill.
Personally I think this is the biggest thing though. Why was there not some sort of way to shut this pipe off even if there was some sort of accident above the ground? I am sure the explosion did do some damage, perhaps it was impossible given the circumstances for it to have performed better. I think the anger though is that some information has been found that the BOP may not have been up to spec, or could have been outfitted with additional equipment that could have possibly prevented the spill. No doubt, no one can forsee every accident, but for something as serious as this I think a huge amount of precaution needs to be taken into consideration and whatever can be done by oil companies to prevent oil from spilling given an accident happens should be taken.

If you read the article, or listened to the interview, you will find that the BOP was damaged, in at least two places, and that BP knew it... for weeks prior to the explosion. Those damages caused the BOP to not properly deploy. The fact that BP intentionally chose to not properly test or repair those damaged parts will come back to haunt them in upcoming criminal charges and lawsuits.

Also, had the MMS not been up BP's butt, and enforced the regs properly, this probably would never have happened. They too will "pay the piper" over this disaster.
Thank You Barack Obama for Restoring Honor To The Presidency.
