Stephen Hawking takes a hard line on aliens

Whichever is the case, whether we are evolving in a positive and productive manner, or are evolving to the the point that we will meet our destruction, one or the other will happen. I personally believe the former is the more likely. Evolution of a species is so gradual and takes several setbacks and starts, but over the long haul I think true progress is made. Taking just a couple of points in time, chosen to make a point, is misleading. Evolution takes many adjustments and changes in intellect, emotional state, and action. We never can see the whole picture by looking at a century, a millenium, or an era.

The way things are going right now, I don't necessarily believe that we are evolving in a positive way. If anything, we are moving backwards. We haven't overcome our animal natures at all; and I'm sure if there are aliens watching us, they will treat us according to that.

Well you don't need to be a paralyzed genius on a wheelchair to know that.

Thing is, we're most likely to be the Aliens who'll pay a visit to the native society of a foreign planet.

It's hard to say with any certainty. It seems to me that humans are in a transition phase (for lack of a better description), and we are now starting to learn from doing rather than abstaining from action based on fearful belief systems. To me, this seems like progress overall, but the progress is not apparent if taken solely at face value.

What if there's this species out there that holds a strong religious belief that their Divine Creator constructed their species in His image, and they were his Most Beloved Children? That would mean any other species did not come from this Creator. Perhaps instead from the Creator's antithesis.

Man I'd hate to meet a species like that.

But more seriously, they really might have some sort of belief structure like this. If such a race truly believed that humans were the Devil's work and it was their duty to wipe us out, we'd be in for rough times.

People often assume that a more advanced civilization would somehow be more peaceful or pacifist but our own history is evidence of exactly the opposite. What if they're Klingons?

Well, they should have, but they had a couple of little problems. They wanted things that the white guys had, and they were still too tribal-minded to win in a real conflict.

True for the most part they were divided by tribes but let's face it the Europeans did have the technology over the NATIVES. No matter how well you shape an arrow head and make it aerodynamic it still will be outperformed by a lead bullet in velocity hence in killing power.

Now think of the potential power and weapons systems that an alien civilization which is say 500,000 or 1,000,000 more ‘advanced’ than we are.

Our missiles vs. their hyper piper phase inverted radiation focused magnetically propelled photon proton energized compressed velocity quark death ray.

Nah, skip the blankets. White man had a habit of floating blankets containing smallpox down the rivers to Indian tribes. You could say that these were the first documented cases of biological warfare.

Isn't that an urban legend? Well maybe not an urban legend but suburban river legend, still I heard that it was debunked. Maybe I am wrong, I was once, last millennium.

Yes, let's be serious. If there is any advanced civilization that is able to travel light-years in order to come here, they are most likely pretty mentally and psychologically advanced in comparison to us. I genuinely figure that we would be much more likely to be aggressors to them than they to us. They might blast us all into space on our first strike, but I really doubt they would have bad intentions toward us. Maybe I'm wrong, because it's all speculation.

Ok, yes I have been intrigued by space travel and the possibility that we may be visited by an advanced civilization. Yet I do fear that an advanced civilization would be the aggressor just was we were when we “discovered “ people in the new world. A more advanced civilization may indeed be able to “think” in a more advanced (technological ) way but that is no guarantee that they would not be aggressors.

Hawking's view on First Contact has been the one I've always held since evolution can only work with a species evolving due to a sustained environment of extreme competition. When a species is "perfect," as with the mosquito, e.g., it simply ceases to become smarter and badder, whereas human beings in their multitudes of generations sucked so bad that they had to change many times over, becoming increasingly vicious and cunning to the point that we became the earth's dominant species.*

With only our own example to go by as to how intelligent life might develop, it's only reasonable to assume that an alien technological civilization would be at least equally competitive. And with carbon-based life as the only example, it's only reasonable that such a species would find our world to be a tasty morsel.

I believe it was highly irresponsible to send out the voyager advertising our whereabouts before we were, as Hawking said, independently colonized on various worlds and thus better suited to dealing with a superior and hostile alien force. Much wiser would have been to conduct passive research: finding alien civilizations quietly, studying them anonymously, and only making first contact when we understood them adequately.
*opposable thumbs didn't hurt, either.

I also feel that we just may have sent out that calling card saying look we are here come eat us.

I wonder who would be more infested with disease. Us, or the aliens.

we'd probable kill each other off...unless they have similar microbes (for some reason I couldn't imagine).

Assuming that they are carbon based they may have some micro-organism that is benigh or maybe benificial to them but death to us. Or vice versa.

What if by some hyper stretch of paranoid thought are the late night radio talk show tories about alien cattle mutilationa somehow true so are they thinking that the cattle are the intelligent ones so they study bull?

Unless the civilization of the invading alien force was interplanetary and interspecies, I can't think of why it would be safe to assume that they would be acquainted with more viruses than we would be.

maybe they invented some for ha ha's!

Well us Europeans either Christionized the savages or killed them. Look at the Muslimsfor crying out loud those schmucks think that their ALLAH GUY commands them to terrorize the infidels...
