The Foreign Office has apologised for a "foolish" document which suggested the Pope's visit to the UK could be marked by the launch of "Benedict" condoms.
Called "The ideal visit would see...", it said the Pope could be invited to open an abortion clinic and bless a gay marriage during September's visit.
The Foreign Office stressed the paper, which resulted from a "brainstorm" on the visit, did not reflect its views.

--snip--
The junior civil servant responsible had been put on other duties, the Foreign Office said.

--snip--

The paper was attached as one of three "background documents" to a memo dated 5 March 2010 inviting officials in Whitehall and Downing Street to attend a meeting to discuss themes for the papal visit.
It suggested Benedict XVI could show his hard line on the sensitive issue of child abuse allegations against Roman Catholic priests by "sacking dodgy bishops" and launching a helpline for abused children.
The document went on to propose the Pope could apologise for the Spanish Armada or sing a song with the Queen for charity.

I hope this junior gets a pay rise for giving the country a laugh on a rainy sunday morning. :rofl

On the other hand, some of those suggestions (the helpline for abused victims) would go a long way to take away the pariah status of the Catholic Church and this pope in particular.

He should get a promotion. The Pope SHOULD do what he suggests to gain just some credibility back for his pathetic religion.

Yes when you don't agree with a religion just trash its leader then you can feel good about yourself again if only for a little while :2wave:

Its no surprise some in the British government did this. They should have apologized for it.

But Pete is a shining example of how many liberals think tolerance is great unless they disagree with someone else then its ok to be intolerant. Nothing like another dose of liberal hypocrisy.

Very true. We see these examples of 'tolerance' and respect for 'diversity' daily. Nothing like free thinkers who want everyone to think alike! :rofl

Give me a break. This man is not only a former Nazi, but he was the head of the churches anti-pedophilia department for a long time and in many cases he did NOTHING when they knew perfectly well something bad was going on or had gone on.

What ever criticism and attacks against this man is fully justified. He should resign in shame frankly, and the church should clean up its own house instead of blaming media, society, porn, homosexuals and jews for the depravity of their own members.

They should arrest the Pope.

This one is actually a good idea.

Another incredible lack of knowledge on display here.

It was a required by law that he join the hitler youth group and he protested by never attending any meetings whatsoever.

So he says...

And he is still a former Nazi who covered up and hid child molesters in the catholic church.

Technically, he was never a Nazi. He was a member of the Hitler Youth. He was a victim of the cult of personality that existed in Germany at that time. Much like what's going on in America, today.

Are you a former Facist, because you're Spanish and Spain is home to the longest running Facist government in history? No, you're not.

Nothing to do with the religion - this is about the man who ran the Vatican office dealing with (among other things) paedophiles and child abusers masquerading as priests in the Catholic Church. This is about a pope who while in office dealing with such priests, did nothing about American Fr Lawrence Murphy who apparently molested 200 deaf boys.

Too bad neither the pope or the Catholic Church have been as quick to apologise or atone for what some of its priests did .

And what do "liberals" have to do with a story about a pope who failed to act while heading a dept tasked with dealing with misdemeanours? Where's the political angle in paedophilia?

Yes, I heard this on the news. What I didn't quite understand was how/why this was sent to the pope  otherwise it was very amusing.

Look it's ok to attack Pope Arnold and the other Big Hats for not doing the right thing about the pervert priests but there is no reason to attack the basic religion.

OMG don't tell that you think that the Tea Partiers will burn the Capital office building just like the NAZI'S burned the Reichstag and then blame it on the Democrats ? SAY IT AIN'T SO ! Say that the Tea Partiers will not do that!!!

I agree.
Why are we apologising to the Pope?

Like he deserves it and if he doesn't come to UK. Thank God, we have just saved millions in security on him.

Absolutely hilarious.

I'd buy 'em just to have 'em. :rofl "Popapalooza!" Get your Pope Foam Finger!

Technically he was in the Hitler youth because that was what society expected. Now we have no way of knowing if he was pro Hitler or not, other than his word. And considering the amount "omissions" and "lies" that he has been caught in just recently, then well ... we are back to.. so he says.

I aint Spanish.

Why not? It is protecting these men and has done unspeakable horrors ever since it came to be. These are facts, and pushing them under the rug will not change the facts.

SO THE LAW SAID.

Will you just do some basic research for once?

Just one time? Please?

And so what? The question is not what the law said or did not say, or what society choose to want of its youth in Nazi Germany. The question is to what degree he embraced said law, political party and youth organisation and for this we only have his word. And his word is not worth that much considering what we know of his actions (or lack of) during the last pope.

Congratulations! You are the 20 millionth person to bring up the lame "liberals say they are tolerant but ______" comment!

So, that makes him the 20 millionth person to observe the truth about the hypocrisy of liberals... preach tolerance and rail against those they deem to be intolerant, but when there are people and organizations that disagree with them, their call for tolerance disappears...

I'm a liberal (not really, but that's what you'd call me). I hereby state that I'm very intolerant of alot of things. Tolerance is not the fundamental basis of my world view.

Moreover, no liberal ever said tolerance means you never criticize anyone.

So get over it, it's lame.

Don't mistake this for me excusing the actions of the guy who wrote this memo either.

I am not saying tolerance equates to not criticizing anyone. I am a pretty tolerant guy, but I am not averse to criticising people when it is warranted. However, there is a difference between criticism and branding people a Nazi without a full understanding of the facts as at least one person on this thread has...
