The United Nations has quietly upped this year's peacekeeping budget for earthquake-shattered Haiti to $732.4 million, with two-thirds of that amount going for the salary, perks and upkeep of its own personnel, not residents of the devastated island.
The world organization plans to spend the money on an expanded force of some 12,675 soldiers and police, plus some 479 international staffers, 669 international contract personnel, and 1,300 local workers, just for the 12 months ending June 30, 2010.
Some $495.8 million goes for salaries, benefits, hazard pay, mandatory R&R allowances and upkeep for the peacekeepers and their international staff support. Only about $33.9 million, or 4.6 percent, of that salary total is going to what the U.N. calls "national staff" attached to the peacekeeping effort.
Well, well, well......what do we have here? The great and wonderful self-serving UN. Yup with the US military there, there's so much peacekeeping for the UN to do.

Helping the poor people of the world for free would be communist!

But I digress. It's possible if they didn't pay them they'd do a crappy job. This isn't the only story like this, a bunch of groups in Canada, like Canada red cross got hit for paying their chairman in excess of 400K salary a year. I wish every cent we donate could go to the people that need it. :(

I think it is an understandable mistake. The money was destined for an international disaster and the UN merely forgot that while they qualified as one, it was actually for Haiti.

People used to say that about CEOs and bankers.

Thats why I said its possible, and you want to compare aid workers to CEO's of big banks? If I could choose to pay one better, as long as it wasnt from donations (or bailouts:mrgreen:) I'd give my dosh to the aid workers, who put their asses on the line.

The UN from top to bottom is corrupt and is nothing more than waste of money from the time it was formed until today.

We could save a fortune if we kicked their heinie out of our Country and drop out and never even talk to them as a group again.

The UN loves to vote against us but they love the money, which without our cash they would fold. And that's a very good thing.

I just don't like the UN. Their asses aren't on the line and they are usually in the way. Most of the these workers all have jobs back home and are merely volunteers because it pays. You stop the monetary benefit and feed them MREs and they would begin to disappear.
