Views of the US around the world have improved sharply over the past year, a BBC World Service poll suggests.

For the first time since the annual poll began in 2005, America's influence in the world is now seen as more positive than negative.

The improved scores for the US coincided with Barack Obama becoming president, a BBC correspondent notes.

Nearly 30,000 people in 28 countries were interviewed for the poll, between November 2009 and February 2010.

In these nations - or 14 of them, not including the US itself - positive views of the US fell to a low of 28% on average in 2007, from 38% in 2005, but recovered to 35% in 2009 and 40% in this year's poll.

After a year, it appears the 'Obama effect' is real
Steven Kull, director of Pipa

"People around the world today view the United States more positively than at any time since the second Iraq war," said Doug Miller, chairman of international polling firm GlobeScan, which carried out the poll with the Program on International Policy Attitudes (Pipa) at the University of Maryland.

"While still well below that of countries like Germany and the UK, the global standing of the US is clearly on the rise again."

It seems Barack Obama being elected as our president is as much a breath of fresh air to the rest of the world as it has been to Americans.

Thank you Barack Obama for restoring honor and integrity to America.

Who cares, opinion polls of other countries are just about the only thing that matter less than opinion polls in this country. This doesn't mean or signal any change in policy, for example just because Obama is more people among the people doesn't mean France or Germany is going to send more troops to Afghanistan, although seeing how Germany botching up northern Afghanistan maybe thats for the better.

If Obama can get along with and negotiate better with those country's leaders, thats one thing, but a popularity poll among the people doesn't mean much. That being said, it certainly doesn't hurt.

It will take a long time to repair the damage that GWB did to our Country's integrity and standing in the world. However, this is a step in the right direction.

GWB lowered our standards to those of our enemies. We lost the honor and respect that we have enjoyed in this country for over a century. The United States should be a beacon to the rest of the world. Obama understands that the beacon cannot be seen if you are down in the gutters with those who oppose us.

Thank you President Obama for restoring America's glory.

Too bad Israel hates Obama.

Why wouldn't the world like us more now? Obama has done his best to cut our nuts off while going on an apology tour.

Unfortunately, after GWB...we had a lot to apologize for. First and foremost, GWB should apologize to this Country for selling out our integrity. Since that is not going to happen, at least we have a leader now who sees the importance of restoring our honor and integrity.

LOL What honor and integrity has Obama restored? He's lied more than any other president in their first year from promises to his acts. Where is this fantasy honor of his?

Clinton should be hung for treason for allowing US missile tech to be stolen by China for campaign funds. Now that is dishonor

Give Barry a chance.... he's already far surpassed Carter.

World opinion and a dollar will get you a cup of coffee.

I personally find American success and world approval rate to be inversely related. Let's face it - much of the second-world planet suffers from massive tall poppy syndrome. Obama's actions are detrimental to America's growing GDP, which tickles other nations because the last thing they want to see is the USA staying on top.

In this matter, Obama is essentially an American apologist. Princes don't bow to paupers, and America has no reason to put up a front of appeasement because they're winning a race that other nations don't attempt to run. If America's economic policies keeps them head and shoulders above the mixed-market debacle that is Europe, so be it. I'm out of sympathy for them and their inferior products, laughable work ethic, high unemployment, and miniscule GDPs.

We don't count on you ever warming to the president, but it is a relief to many of us that less of the world counts us as an enemy.

Do you have a Tinman and Cowardly Lion to go with your strawman. Nothing about this thread talks about people counting us as "enemies" in the slightest. I didn't have, and don't have, a very positive view of France for some time. That doesn't mean I view them or count them as an "enemy". Why don't you go follow the yellow brick road to whatever imaginary conversation you THINK people are having because no one in here is talking about anyone in the world counting us as an "enemy". When yo'ure tired of not being in Kansas anymore why don't you come back to the thread and actually discuss what's being ACTUALLY talked about.

Overall I'd view the upward trend as a positive thing. That said, there are numerous variables that go into this before I can simply declare it a net positive or and Obama only thing.

What factors exactly, other than simply the name and the reputation, caused these people to have a negative view on America in the past and a positive one now? Would Iraq and our strategy in it be a portion of that? If so that'd tell us a bit about the intellectual honesty presented when one compares Bush's Iraq plan going forward to what Obama has continued. Was it a negative view regarding America's expressing of its military might in general? If so, again, what does that say about their change despite Obama's actions in Afghanistan? Has it grew into a more positive view of America due to the continued apologizes and statements of wrong doing in the past (always attributed to Bush, never to a congress that went along with it, of which at times Obama was part of)? If that's the case do I find that a worth while reason to have our numbers uptick. Can they actually give an actual tangible reason other than its Obama and he represents hope and change? And if they can't does that really matter?

All of these are pertinent bits of information that frankly we do not have from this that I would want to know before making a concrete "yes this is good" or "no this is not good" statement. I would lean to a cautious "Overall its a good thing" despite reservations as to the legitimacy of the rationale behind the rise in public opinion.

The world approves of our unilateral military action when it is directed against terrorists. Saddam Hussein was not a terrorist, and our adventure in Iraq left AlQaeda to regroup and grow stronger. Republicans seem to have a blind spot regarding the justified use of force and world opinion of it. You seem to think everyone is stupid enough to believe any lie, swallow any excuse, accept any rationalization regarding the misuse of armed force. There is no strawman here, many nations including China and Russia were untrustful of US intentions under the Bush regime. Obama is repairing those relationships, and the world will be safer for it. Most on the right believe the US should attack Iran, John McCain repeated this outrageous bravado just last week. Does it occur to any of you gung-ho types that if the US attacked Iran, China and Russia would quickly form an alliance to get their oil? Did you love the Cold War so much you want to return to it? Or are you, as I suspect, just refusing to think of the consequences of your bellicose language?

So let me get this straight... a poll of 14 countries (the whole world?) shows that those countries have about the same view of the U.S. as they did in 2005, plus maybe 2%. This is shown as evidence that Obama has improved world relations, without giving any specific policy examples of how this is so.

Hmmmm.

ROTFLMAO... Honor... ROTFLMFAO... Integrity... This Chicago thug. LOL...

These same people loved Carter... Failure.
They loved Clinton... Impeached President.

They hated Reagan with a passion. Bush 43 as well.
In Europe W's years were a repeat of the stupidities of the 80's.

I'll take the presidents they hate... every time.

Good point...... and one only has to look at how the Leaders around the world treat Barry to see what the "world " consensus is.

This poll just shows the stupidity of the world. All Obama does is apologize. Of course people are going to like a pansy person who blames his nation for all the world's ills. This poll isn't good news in the least.

President Bow,Bow, Bow, Wow!
Yep, these people think he's from the minor leagues.

They enjoy the demise he's bringing... when your enemies are cutting their throats, why interfere except to exact through demands... more from the enemy.

It seems the American people are waking up and leaving the cult; a great sign.

What will be shocking to people in Europe is Bow, Bow, Bow, Wow's losing in 2012. They won't be able to figure out why because they don't get the news. It is amazing what they report... but they're... supporters, just like our propagandists in the press.

Hmmmm.

They even made a graph, but you still don't get it. Oh that's right, you're Republican. If you look closely and turn down Fox News, you'll see that positive opinions of the US rose from about 28% to 40% now - that's an increase of 12%. Now about those policy examples.....*sigh*
