ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Opponents of the fiscally conservative tea party movement say they plan to infiltrate and dismantle the political group by trying to make its members appear to be racist, homophobic and moronic.

Jason Levin, creator of Crash The Tea Party!, said Monday the group has 65 leaders in major cities across the country who are trying to recruit members to infiltrate tea party events for April 15—tax filing day, when tea party groups across the country are planning to gather and protest high taxes.

Well its bad if they do...

But ah. I'd say this has not much credibility considering they said they were gonna do it... So if they do it we'll know who they are. So really I'm not shocked.

Funny thing is...

They(the crash the tea party movement) have not only illegitmized their allies and the rest of the tea party's opponents, but have funneled the perfect scapegoat-card to the tea party. All the tea party has to do is point to these people, and it destroys any attack on their character. It's perfect, perfect timing.

The left is truly frightened by the Tea Party Movement. :2razz:

Not really.

Most sane leftists realize that the Tea Party is going to be absorbed by the GoP in the not-too-distant future. Tea just doesn't have the resources to become a viable option over the Republicans.

This tea party is a more tame version of the Leftist flower-power movements. They start with broad ideological demands, but they start to loose steam eventually, or some of their more prominent members change picket signs for briefcases that says "GoP" and they become disillusioned to face the ideological gap between sane America and partisan America.

This sort of thing only strengthens the persecution complex these people carry... I wish people would understand that.

Talk to me when it gets a leader, has a clear agenda, and is motivated by more than just fear and anger. When it does that, it will be a true movement, but right now it is just mobs of discontent citizens.

Channeling Marie are we?

Little did you know that these are actually tea partiers trying to discredit their critics by pretending to be crashers who are pretending to be tea partiers. Nobody ever suspects the triple cross!

And then there are tea partiers who really are just racist, homophobic bigots.

But is anyone really that intelligent if they judge an entire group of people by the actions of a few?

Why should I take the word of a leftist on this?

Surprisingly good line, if somewhat inaccurate. I at least got a chuckle in the manner you intended.

This story is a classic example of stupidity. The Tea Party folks have done nothing to deserve people messing with them like this, the guy doing it is clearly a fruitcake, and this is not how politics should be in this country. I will point out though that just as the Tea Party supporters always point out, accurately, that the fringe with the over the top signs and statements are not representative of them, this idiot is not representative of anything other than a handful of idiots on the other fringe. We need to on both sides stop giving so much attention to the fringe element idiots.

We are not frightened, we are apalled by the mass hypocrisy of a group that suffered worse abuse through 8 years of George Bush, but suddenly are outraged by a president who has included Republican ideas in his legislation despite their refusal to support it. They rail against higher taxes, though their taxes have not gone up, they scream about government-run health care, though the health care bill is no such thing, they foam about dictatorial powers, though this president is the most mainstream since Eisenhower. The "left" is curious how long so many people can labor under the fiction that Obama is "radical".

This President went out of his way to push ideas from the opposing party. He went out of his way to invite key opposition leadership to help draft bills. He struck for compromise on controversial issues that his base didn’t wish. People railed against him only helping the rich, but he didn’t. They scream about “lies” concerning linking Iraq directly to the 9/11 attacks, yet it was only those making ignorant assumptions out of hatred that ever heard such stated links. They worried about dictatorial powers and detention centers and covert arrest of political opponents, yet here we stand with a new President. He was the most mainstream President since Eisenhower.

If you couldn’t guess at the top, you should by the bottom. Talking about Bush. You know…Prescription drug, No Child Left Behind, Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

It’s amazing how you can cherry pick certain details and focus on the tree’s rather than the forest and claim things. Doesn’t make your assertion any more true in reality however.

Kinda like the story in the OP. It's a small sapling in the forest. People on both sides spend so much time concentrating on the fringe people that are easy to argue against, instead of the movement in whole, which is harder. The republicans are not racists, the tea party is not filled with loonies, the democrats are not all plotting to smear any one. It's a tiny number in each case. People who focus on the loonies are generally the ones who cannot effectively argue against the real issues presented by each group, and have to find targets they can handle.

I wonder how many anti-tea partiers will be out there throwing eggs, yelling racial slurs at black tea partiers (like one who is called "Uncle Tom") and beating down people?

Unfortunately, at least IMO, it appears that to some e.g., select TV/radio pundits, the stake in political outcomes has become so great that partisan politics has become almost a de facto "theory of everything."

Under such a rubric, President Bush is viewed as solely and completely to blame for the recent financial crisis/severe recession, even as many seeds of the crisis predated his tenure. Today, even as a cyclical recovery, albeit a moderate one, appears to be getting underway and there have been signs that the labor market has stabilized and may be moving toward a resumption of growth, there is desperation on the part of some to deny those potential positive developments. After all, such developments could be politically inconvenient. They could rebut the "sky will fall" warnings that were made during the height of the fiscal stimulus debate creating a credibility crisis for those who made such predictions. They could have an impact on the electoral landscape.

In reality, some policy errors by President Bush and his Administration played a role. But many other factors prior to his Administration and beyond his control were responsible. With respect to the fiscal stimulus, one could have argued against it without prophesying doom and gloom e.g., a more nuanced argument about whether the taking on of additional debt in the context of a structural budget situation that needs to be addressed entailed short term benefit at larger long-term cost could have been made.

So now the Tea Party movement and its backers on these boards are building the "we have been infiltrated" defense so that their own members can attack and shout "bad" things at people on the other side without being called for it.

Its not like the Tea Party movement needs infiltrating since it is made of in part of crackpots and loonies..

You're absolutely right Pete. People on this board have infilitrated the AP as a devious conspiracy to be able to publish a story about another board member who is posing as an activist and started a phony website all so that they could come back to DP and use it to lay the groundwork for a "we've been infiltrated" defense.
