i just don't agree with this policy. Once again some homeless people can get aggressive while the vast majority are not. And how do you know honestly that they only run out of food once a year? Do you go and ask them?
Actually there is news broadcast saying they are out or might run out of food.Which is usually around thanksgiving or Christmas when they want to provide low income people with a turkey and all the fixings.

I agree there are lots of organizations that help the homeless, but in a lot of cities, especially the bigger ones, they just do not have the recourses to help everyone. Most homeless people tend to have have a mental condition so they can't get a job. They're just trying to survive, saying they're all one thing or another is just wrong.
I never said they all were a certain way.
"A nation can survive its fools, and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within. An enemy at the gates is less formidable, for he is known and carries his banner openly. But the traitor moves amongst those within the gate freely, his sly whispers rustling through all the alleys, heard in the very halls of government itself. For the traitor appears not a traitor; he speaks in accents familiar to his victims, and he wears their face and their arguments, he appeals to the baseness that lies deep in the hearts of all men. He rots the soul of a nation, he works secretly and unknown in the night to undermine the pillars of the city, he infects the body politic so that it can no longer resist. A murder is less to fear"

I'm not the OP, and i was referring to the story itself, not the post.

Distribution centers outright running out of food, and being able to feed everyone everyday are two different things.

Well if you didn t say it outright it seemed implied. Sorry.

Just this once for a minute can we consider that this is really not about Jesus or free speech. I read nothing about either in the story.

I'm sure if were about free speech the ordinance would say it's now against the law to talk while on a street corner or some other nonsense.

Having seen this type of thing come up in Council meetings more than once I figure one of a few things may have happened.

    1. There was a minor accident blamed on a homeless panhandler, or young person selling either flowers or news papers.

2, A Council member was approached by a panhandler and didn't have a dollar to spare and was embarrassed and so they started the campaign.

    3. There really is a genuine concern for public safety because of the growing number of people needing to either sell or panhandle on street corners.

I would suggest that if people feel strongly about this and want to have and effect on the ip coming vote email the City Council in Oakland Park, Fla. telling them you were planning a Vacation their in July and have now put your plans on hold pending the outcome of the vote in June tell them how you feel and get others to do the same.

Believe it or not they do listen when it involves money.

The measure prohibits "beggars, panhandlers or solicitors" from selling any item on a public street because it "distracts drivers from their primary duty to watch traffic and potential hazards in the road."
I don't see anything about completely banning giving to beggers. However, it should NOT be done on a public street, which according to the article in the OP, is all this does. This is a completely reasonable restriction as this IS a traffic hazard.

Just a couple of years ago, I was in the left-turn lane on a road ready to make a left turn when a taxi driver suddenly stopped in front of me to buy a flower from a woman at the intersection. I nearly rear-ended the taxi and missed the light.

    Completely reasonable rule.
