[R.I.P.] Polish President Lech Kaczynski 'in plane crash'

BBC News - Looking beyond Poland's 'unprecedented disaster'

The irony of President Lech Kaczynski dying in Russia on his way to the KATYN murders commenerartion is ammplified in theseparagraphs from a BBC story
"Lech Kaczynski, who was elected president in 2005, used this right to carve out a role for himself in foreign policy.

He pursued an arms-length policy towards Russia. This saw as much attention being paid to defending Georgia's independence, and that of Ukraine, as a drive for better relations with Russia relations spearheaded by the government of Prime Minister Donald Tusk. "

Poland is wise to keep Russia at arms length, and strengthening its ties with the West. Poland is an important and great ally of ours.

Re: Polish leader, 96 others dead in Russia jet crash

The Tupolev Tu-154M did not have a stellar record but Smolensk airport did not have ILS =Instrument Landing System

Poland is in Shock.
Presidential elections slated for October are going to be Moved up.

Plane may have tried to land withOUT clearance on Second attempt.
Apparently asked to land somewhere else instead by the tower and ignored.

The particular old Russian plane had a history of problems.
What were they doing on this lemon?

HTML:
Lack of ILS
The Smolensk-North, a former military air base now in mixed military-civilian use, does not have an instrument landing system[32] that would make a landing in dense fog a routine operation; the military cargo airplanes operated out of it can land and take-off without ILS, with only basic landing support in normal mode. Its runway is also rather short and narrow for a Tu-154.

Quite devastating to Poland.

Yes, Poland is important as a wedge country against Russia. Poland does not have a border with Russia but Poland has a good sized border with Ukraine. Poland is also a window to the West for Ukraine and that helps to keep the Russian claws off Ukraine or at least reduces the infection of Russian scratches.

Modern Poland is unsurprisingly wary of it's neighbours, given the history of the mid- to late-20th century and it's historically precarious geographic position. It would be wiser for it to reject any idea of it being a 'wedge' of any kind between East and West, that's what got it into so much strife in the 30s. It needs to embrace and whole-heartedly participate in the EU and avoid feeding into any revived West vs. Russia confrontation.

It DOES share a border with Russia. Its north-easterly border abutts Russia's Kaliningrad enclave and Belarus, immediately to the east, is pretty much a Russian satellite.

The worrying levels of nationalism in Russia, and the pandering to that by the Putin/Medvedev régime, makes it even more vital that Poland avoid going down the sort of aggressive nationalistic road that the Kaczynsky brothers pursued and represented when they were in full control of the Polish government and state. Ironically, it was the alternative route of reconciliation and cooperation that led to the agreement to hold the Katyn memorial in Smolensk. Let's hope that the legacy of this horrible accident will be that Russia and Poland further their mutually beneficial process of improving relations.

Poland also has the cultural imperative to resist the aggressive secularization that the EU likes to demand of its members.

Incidentally, this thead is a 'RIP' thread, which means no dissing the deceased...

Also, the statement that you put in quotes by me was not entirely my words.I'd appreciate that, if you plan on quoting me, that you don't include the writings of others...

Saying that Kaczinsky was an aggressive nationalist is hardly 'dissing the deceased'. He would have been delighted to have been so identified.

I was quoting another poster. You just replied to me but it showed my words as someone else's post. I don't know what's going on with the system.

I am aware of Königsberg or as you called by the imperialist name Kaliningrad. Sort of a Danzig corridor huh !!!?? Let's be serious here about which "neighbor" Poland needs to worry about - Germany should be passive for the next 500 years. Ukraine has Russia hanging Noerteast and East of it and Ukraine' president is name benedict Arnoldlovich and it of course a Russia butt kisser. Ukraine and Poland haven't had any major fight since the Kozak Hetman state of the 18th century. And Poland was the very first country to recognize a newly re-indepedent Ukraine. Neither the Czech Republic or Slovakia will invade them and the Baltics are too busy watching out for the Evil Ones of the North - Ruskies. So who is left ??

True that hyper Nationalism will eventually hurt any country. Hopefull Russia's hyper-nationalsm will start hurting it harder and harder.
ps agree about Belarus they lost gave up their own right to even be a country since their favorite occupation has been to kiss the Moskaiylskiy butt.

Why would he be an "aggressive nationalist " ? I sort saw him as a preservationist. Oh well !!!

The questons remain:

Was there ILG at Smolensk North Air Base?

2010 Polish Air Force Tu-154 crash - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Was the ILG actualy PRMG?

[ame]http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PRMG[/ame]

Did No. 101 hit a NDB tower before crashing into the trees.

Non-Directional Beacon - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Was there enough fuel to go back to Minsk or on to Moskow?

Why did not the air traffic controllers mention the Fog at Somelensk while No 101 was over Minsk?

Was the pilot exercising his own judgement, or was he following orders from superiors on board the plane?

Were there two or four approaches to Smolensk?

Did No 101 dump fuel? How much, Why?

"300 to 400 metres (980 to 1,300 ft) off the landing path,[14] after the pilots attempted a go-around.[15]"

Why was No 101 not aligned with the runway?

http://rt.com/Top_News/2010-04-10/plane-crash-smolensk-region.html

Could the runway lights be seen by the pilot and co-pilot of No 101?

Were the runway lights working? Were they on?

Was a Russian Interpreter translating tower communications into Polish?

..
