A plane carrying Polish President Lech Kaczynski has crashed near a Russian airport, officials say.

Russian media reported that 87 people were killed in the crash near Smolensk, and a regional governor was quoted as saying there were no survivors.

Polish officials said Mr Kaczynski was on board along with his wife Maria and several senior government figures.

They were in Russia to mark the 70th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, when Soviets killed thousands of Poles.

The Russian emergencies ministry told Itar-Tass news agency the plane crashed at 1056 Moscow time (0656 GMT).

Ministry spokeswoman Irina Andrianova said it had been flying from Moscow to Smolensk, but had no details on the identities of those killed.

Smolensk regional governor Sergei Antufiev told Russian TV that no-one had survived.

"As it was preparing for landing, the Polish president's aircraft did not make it to the landing strip," he said.

"According to preliminary reports, it got caught up in the tops of trees, fell to the ground and broke up into pieces. There are no survivors in that crash.

"We are clarifying how many people there were in the [Polish] delegation. According to preliminary reports, 85 members of the delegation and the crew."

....

I wonder if this is Obamas fault too...

But really, terrible stuff.

But really, terrible stuff.

Why? though I suspect Bush will be blamed by those with third stage Bush Derangement Syndrome

W świętym wspominaniu...

Vychnaya Pomnyat !!

Foerever Rememebrance to my ancestral friends and ancestral neighbors !

I am shocked of course and am saddened beyond belief that this happened when they were on their way to the Katyn murder rememberance which was just one of the crimes against humanity perpetrated by Russians !!

May President Kacynzski and all who perished in that tragic accident rest in peace.

Moderator's Warning:
Please refrain from using this tragic plane crash as an opportunity to engage in partisan politics i.e., using it to posture with respect to Presidents Bush and Obama.

Thank you.

My deep condolences to the families and friends of all those aboard, and to the Polish people.

This is very sad for the Polish people and leadership. My thoughts and prayers go out to the Polish nation and the family and friends of those killed.

Although I thought Lech Kaczynski and his brother were a negative and reactionary force on the European political stage, I still feel great sympathy for his family and the families of the others who died in Smolensk. I also feel sorry for the Polish nation having lost it's figurehead. May they all grieve in peace.

I of course am not a fan an any reationary forces in Poland or my ancestral home Ukraine but yes this is a very terrible and ironic tragedy since they were on their way to the KATYN murder rememberamce. I am sure that it is of no big surprise to anyone who has read any post I have written related to Russia that for a fleeting microsecond I thought "OMG KGB" but no obviously that would not be logical or in any way usefull for the Russians to wipe out this Lech, at this time , in that place.

Just read that minutes ago, very sad. It seems the pilot waived off an order to fly to the next clear field and tried to land in foggy conditions, with tragic results. My thoughts and prayers are with the families affected and the nation of Poland.

What a sad day. I have a friend in Poland and he said everyone is so sad that even the sky is crying.

Just saw this on Msn my heart goes out to the families of all that were involved.

My thoughts, and payers goes to the polish nation, the first family relatives.

Polish leader, 96 others dead in Russia jet crash

Huge tragedy and unfortunate and perhaps unwise so much of the Polish leadership was on one plane Though the reason they were going was an important event. And ironically on a trip to remember other fallen officers/Katyn.
No foul play suspected at this point.

SMOLENSK, Russia – Polish President Lech Kaczynski and some of the country's highest military and civilian leaders died on Saturday when the presidential plane crashed as it came in for a landing in thick fog in western Russia, killing 97, officials said.

Russian and Polish officials said there were No survivors on the 26-year-old Tupolev, which was taking the president, his wife and staff to events marking the 70th anniversary of the massacre in Katyn forest of thousands of Polish officers by Soviet secret police.

The crash devastated the upper echelons of Poland's political and military establishments. On board were the army chief of staff, the navy chief commander, and heads of the air and land forces. Also killed were the national bank president, deputy foreign minister, army chaplain, head of the National Security Office, deputy parliament speaker, Olympic Committee head, civil rights commissioner and at least two presidential aides and three lawmakers, the Polish foreign ministry said.

Although initial signs pointed to an accident with no indication of foul play, the death of a Polish president and much of the Polish state and defense establishment in Russia en route to commemorating one of the saddest events in Poland's long, complicated history with Russia, was laden with tragic irony."...

Poland is in Shock.
Presidential elections slated for October are going to be Moved up.

Plane may have tried to land withOUT clearance on Second attempt.
Apparently asked to land somewhere else instead by the tower and ignored.

The particular old Russian plane had a history of problems.
What were they doing on this lemon?
