    To Russia, Without Love

I've heard of troubles with adopted Russian children before, but this story takes the cake. Very troubling and very sad.

To Russia, Without Love - CBS Evening News - CBS News

(CBS) Russian authorities say a 7-year-old boy named Artyom arrived all alone in Moscow after an overnight flight from Washington, D.C. - with cookies and coloring pens in his backpack, and a letter from his adoptive American mother.

"I am sorry to say that for the safety of my family, friends, and myself," the letter said, "I no longer wish to parent this child. As he is a Russian national, I am returning him to your guardianship."

CBS News correspondent Richard Roth reports the letter was signed, "Torry Hansen."

At a Siberian orphanage, they remember Hansen as the 33-year-old nurse from Tennessee who played happily with Artyom before adopting him last September. But her letter called the boy violent and mentally unstable.

Shown on Russian TV today, talking to a child care official, Artyom's was asked, "did she hit you?"

"No," says the boy, gesturing to show his hair was pulled.

The Seattle agency that arranged the adoption says it's "saddened", but sheds no light on what happened.

    Re: To Russia, Without Love

In virtually all of those former "Soviet" countries the adoptive process is much less than professional and often worse it is child trafficking. I have helped an American family with translation in their process to adopt a child, NOT from Russia but a neighboring country. From what I have seen is that the process is heavily loaded with fees that they charge Americans and it does not appear that the potential adoptive parents get much truth about the child.

This case of this "Russian” child seems like they (Russian orphanage
) just wanted to unload this boy. The boy, Artyom Savelyev, is from what I can deduce from his name not a Russian at all but based on his name is from an ethnic group that is not even Slavic. Or mixed. Taking into account the Russians bent to be prejudice against non Russian citizens I wonder if they are pushed this kid on the American woman knowing that he had problems and that he was not Russian.

This type of behaviorby orphanages is not limited to just the Russians.

I do not recall the Viet Cong asking me if I was a natural born or Naturalized American before they shot at me, they just shot at all of us f107HyperSabr

This adoptive mother was single and I believe that was the case even at the time that she imported this kid from Russia. I really have a problem with anything other than normal mother/father families adopting. Yes I mean that they must be a normal couple to adopt.

I agree we see some high profile people like Madonna who adopt children then turn them over to a nanny to raise and they take the credit.

People who can't meet the standards here maybe the reason things like this happen.

Children raised by single parents have a tougher time I think.

The practice of adopting children from foreign countries should be banned.....
There are already enough children here that need a good home.....

I have been coming around to that thinking also. As I noted I have helped people who are adopting with tranlations etc but I was rather upset and embarassed that the people in the home country of my ancestors are failing to take care of their own. We Americans should take care of our own first and if there are no more American children to adopt and some country is too messed up to take care of their own then ok.

Isn't taking care of your own a form of self suffiicency ? It's like foreigh aid well if we and our own citizens are taken care first then go for it but if we are ignoring our own that is wrong.

yes the Madona schick is all show I beleive. Sure one child had been given an opportnity but that does not solve the root or core problem in the country that is failing to care for it's own citizens.

Sure, just as soon as we Americans:
    • Make adoption affordable for any couple able to provide for children, and not just those able to provide five-figure payouts over the course of the adoption process
    • Drop the idiotic prejudices about couples of one race adopting children of another race
    • Drop the idiotic prejudices about gay couples adopting children
    • Stop giving mothers who start the process of giving up their child so many damned chances to change their minds

In other words, as soon as we make it easier for people able to provide for a child's welfare to adopt, we'll have more people adopting more children.
I'm already gearing up for Finger Vote 2014.

Just for reference, means my post was a giant steaming pile of sarcasm.
