Passenger tried to ignite shoe on United Airlines flight

Hey??????

What about the damn shoe? Was it filled with explosives or extremely flammable?

He should still be declared persona non grata for violating U.S. law. He can't be prosecuted, but he can be asked to leave.

Violating a smoking ban is hardly grounds for banishing someone from the country.

It is if he can't be punished for the crime like anyone else can. Diplomats have to understand that they can't simply flout reasonable laws of a democratic republic just because they have diplomatic immunity.

I would have no problem with jailing him for this. If we cannot legally, at least throw him out of the country for good.

The news report I read said they are doing just that. He is a low ranking diplomat, I think it said he is 23 years of age. He won't be prosecuted but will be going home.

Violating a smoking ban is hardly grounds for banishing someone from the country.

It is when accompanied by a statement "I'm lighting my shoe on fire". :2razz:

He was a smart ass, many people have lost their jobs for that before.

They should have given him an ass whoopin' before his diplomatic immunity kicked in because he might have been joking about that, too......;)

Can we then say some people that posted before this might actually be racist? They saw a header, saw he was from Qutar and loped him with terrorists. Now if the guys white n named Billy Smith and claimed he was just putting a cigerette out on his shoe would people have instantly thought him a terrorist or blamed the proper authorities for trying to smear this guy as a bomber?

Fran Townsend, a former homeland security official under President George W. Bush, said that the person involved was a Qatar diplomat and that her sources said the incident may in fact have been a misunderstanding. She said law enforcement officials examined the man's shoes and were satisfied there were no explosives.

I want to know if the diplomat denies having said he had a shoe bomb. If he does then this might be he says/ she says. Note how fast the media cruxifies this guy? It is almost complacient with its guiding headers in catering towards promoting "MUSLIMS ARE NON-HUMAN TERRORISTS". Noone ever tried to ingite any shoes. There was no shoe-bomb.

I really wish they'd quit trying to **** with the planes. It's getting really annoying to fly anywhere and apparently except for the first time; they're ****ing horrible at it. God damned it...this is just going to make TSA more aggressive.

Yes, another big government agency trying to control our lives. What right does the government have to "keep us safe" on airplanes?

... I can't tell if you are being sarcastic.

Air planes can be rammed into buildings, kill thousands of people, damage property, and traumatize the nation.

So which is it?

CNN says it's no big deal and he's been released.

Well, obviously something happened, or it wouldn't be in the news...

As to what precisely DID happen...

Reading how this man joked about a bomb in his shoe reminds me of the scene from Meet the Parents. Now if this guy would have seen the movie then he would have known they don't joke around about stuff like that.

WASHINGTON—A Qatari diplomat was on his way to an official visit with an imprisoned al-Qaida sleeper agent when he touched off a bomb scare by slipping into an airline bathroom for a smoke, officials said Thursday as the diplomat prepared to leave the U.S.

The diplomat, Mohammed Al-Madadi was going to meet Ali Al-Marri in prison, according to a State Department official and another person close to the matter. Al-Marri, a citizen of Qatar, is serving eight years in prison after pleading guilty last year to conspiring to support terrorism.

Al-Marri was arrested after the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, accused of being a sleeper agent researching poisonous gasses and plotting a cyberattack.

All of our enemies are Muslims? The guy who flew a plane into the IRS building was not a Muslim. Kim Jong-il is not a Muslim. The Columbian and Mexican drug cartels are not Islamic. Radicals and extremists may be our enemy, but they come in all shapes and sizes. And since I live far away from the Middle East, I'm more worried about the Christian extremists than the Muslims.

I don't care who you think your enemies are. My enemies are all Muslim and have been since our government officially launched my kind into the Middle East, Africa, and Asia in 2001.

1) The IRS crashing was about an internal personal grudge and he was no more an enemy than the murderer down the street who kills somebody for plugging his wife.

2) We are not at war with Kim Jong II anymore than we are at war with Iran (but when we are they will be my enemy far more than they will be yours).

3) Columbian and Mexican Drug Cartels are a matter for policemen, not my kind who so they are no more an enemy than the crack dealer in downtown L.A.

4) Radicals and Extremists do come in all different sizes. You got this one right, but it is a pointless statement. My kind have been at war with a specific kind of radical and extremist, and have been long before 2001. There is a grand difference between a home grown terrorist like McVeigh and an international terrorist like Bin Laden. Your problem is that you don't understand or even know the difference between a "PRACTICAL" Terrorist and an "APOCALYPTIC" Terrorist. There are two categories and history has seen both in all cultures. Would you like a summary?

Our war since 9/11 has been entirely focused on Muslims, therefore our enemies are Muslims. If you are afraid of the numerous Christian terrorist organizations that span the globe and seek to destroy and murder even their fellow Christians then I promise you that you are OK. There are no Christian terrorist groups hijacking American Airlines, or blowing up educational facilities, or plotting the murder of thousands in another country. The most you will have to deal with is an individual (and maybe a collaborator or two) who seeks to take out an abortion clinic doctor. But do you even know how many have been killed in the last twenty plus years? Look it up. You'll be very suprised at the rediculous number. 3,000 dead in one day at Arab hands? Big deal....fear Christians and their whopping 5 or 6 abortion clinic murders over the span of twenty years, right?

And I hope the Marine Corps isn't telling you that all of our enemies are Muslims.

The Marine Corps, the Army, the Air Force, and the Navy is under no illusion of who our enemy is. It's you civilians that have your head planted straight up your asses. It's us that have been attacked since the 80s while your kind ignored it. It's us that were not suprised on 9/11 when they finally got your attentions. And it's been us that have been fighting your battles for you as you cower over the prospect of the fantastical grand Christian extremist army about to march down your street. We have attack plans for almost every nation on earth. This includes Iran, North Korea, Russia, and so on. But we aren't at war with them are we? My kind is dying in those places are they? But what is our enemy right now....."the guy who flew a plane into an IRS building?"

By the way, this month marks 18 years Active Duty for me and I have studied this enemy since I saw them in Somalia in 1993. I knew who "our" enemy was long before you civilians watched the fireworkjs display in New York City on September 11, 2001.

I was of course being sarcastic, but a libertarian or teabagger would tell you the TSA is just one of the many big government divisions that should be closed.

I consider terrorists in general to be our enemy, and the IRA was not Muslim, the Hutaree are not Muslim. Narrowing the focus to terrorists not like us, while at the same time broadening the focus by going after those who are not really the enemy, they just look like some of the terrorists is a sure way to lose.

The IRA was not our enemy and they were "Practical Terrorists."

Are we at war with the Hutaree or is this an internal criminal issue?

A sure way to lose is to not understand the difference between a Practical and an Apocalyptic Terrorist and to insist that there is no difference between a home grown moron and an international terrorist organization (and its culture) that attacks and threatens nations as they please (and even slaughter their own fellow Muslim to boot). Why go after Nazi Germany in 1944 when we had KKK racists in America, right? Was it a sure way to lose by targetting the real threat?

The Russians are not Muslims but they have and very likely still are committing acts of terrorism on their minorities and political opponents. Terrorism is an equal opportunity employer.

It's my experience that when people kick off a post like this, it usually indicates someone with an axe to grind or whose mind is made up already.

Oh make no mistake. My mind is absolutely made up about this enemy. I know who it is and I know that the vast majority of my enemy merely act as comfort for those who pick up the vests and AKs. I know this, because I make it a point to understand the world I've deployed into since 1993.

Oooh so close. There are a lot of pissed off people all over the world and a lot of them are pissed at us. I daresay the Chinese dont care for us much more than most Muslim extremists and there are A LOT more of them with A LOT better arms.

And are we at war with China? Are we at war with the pissed off world? Any non-Muslim nations breeding non-Muslim enemies? There's some people in France that hate us too. Are they our enemy? This politically correct weakness that people are parading about is pathetic. You get no where by refusing the identity of your enemy simply because you don't want to be a "racist" or a religion basher (Clinton politics at its best).

This raises two questions for me.

One, why isnt any of this rhetoric aimed at places like China where the same sort of mentality is cultivated and where there is an actual army, nuclear arms, political and economic influence, and a MUCH bigger population?

Two, where was all this on 9/10? You cant say we were never attacked by Muslim extremists before because we were on a number of occasions yet this kind of rhetoric never sprung up until now, why is that?

1) We are not at war with China! We are prepared as any good military should be, but our enemies are not Chinese! What is it with you people and the great bogeyman? The Defense Industry has sold billions of dollars worth of programs to idiot politicians ever since the Berlin Wall came down over the prospect of a war with China. They even convinced themselves that we should prepare for wars that we want to fight instead of wars that we are going to fight (in 2003 civilians freaked out over the lack of body armor, but had no sense of criticisms towards the gross spending towards F/A-22s to fight China with.) This is a nation that needs us as much as we need them. Besides that, a war with China would be won because they are landlocked and it would not be what people imagine.

2) Because until you civilians were attacked on 9/11, none of you gave a damn about the military personel dying in embassies, ships, and barracks. Clinton's policy on intel reports was that no religion was to be "bashed" and therefore reports from the Pentagon and the CIA were watered. Furthermore, you would have heard much more on Bin Laden when Clinton was trying to convince Americans that he is one of our number 1 threats had you all not been more concerned over a cum stained blue dress. he even told Bush that he was sorry he has to pass off these two threats..."Osama Bin Laden and Saddam Hussein." But the kicker here is that you would have been aware of this had you gotten off your ass and stopped looking for politicians and reporters to tell you about the world you live in. Even today you wait for television to enlighten you don't you?

There actually aren't. Even if there were a million armed and committed terrorists, that would only be 1% of the Muslim population of the world which is a damp squirt of a minority.

This is the whole damn point. People want to pretend that there aren't a lot if you consider the population of Muslims around the globe, but just 1 damn percent is a million. You fear a war with a million man Chinese Army, but not a war with a million terrorists in plain clothes who's only goal is the struggle to please God?

The argued number among experts vary (nowhere near a million), but it only took 18 to kill 3,000 didn't? This is what happens when we underestimate this enemy and reduce them to nothing as compared to a fantasized Chinese threat. This is why morons were shocked and bewildered on 9/11 when our enemy sported turbans and a Quran, not chopsticks and Su-27s. Some people are still looking to dismiss the enemy upon us for the fantasized war with China aren't they?

Because 90-95% of the world's population of Muslims are Sunni.

Oh it's not that simple. The Sunni tribe is the region's problem. Even with Iran existing, it's the backward religiously oppressed nations of the Sunni Arabs that produce our enemy. Islam has developed into a religion that caters towards the Sunni Tribe and not towards God over the centuries. Wahhabism is a Sunni creation. Even Khomeini, who blessed suicide bombings as divine and as a tribute to God, has been surpassed by the Sunni tribe, which has inherited the idea of the divinity of the suicide vest.

Strength of faith can overcome any societal or mental barrier, this is not unique to Islam by ANY stretch of the imagination.

Well of course they don't corner the market. Who said they did? Again...politically correct nonesense. Islam is not unique in it's religious zealousy. But are we talking about the Crusades or are we talking about the present? Are we really trying to exonerate the Islamic tidal wave of international violence today because a Christian killed an abortion clinic doctor in his own country a few years back?

This is rediculous.

Indoctrination by over-zealous clerics and a culture of fear combined with desperate economic circumstances, constant war, a bleak future, and constant political infighting helps too.

Culture is fate. You have just summerized the disease behind the symptoms. And yes.... 9/11, Bin Laden, Saddam Hussein, Bashir, countless youth looking to kill themselves for reward, Hezbollah, Qutb, Muslim Brotherhood, etc. are all symtpoms.

I dont know that this is the case.

Well of course it's the case. Where have you been? And guess what? All Sunni or Sunni loyalists. In Somalia they rolled with the war lords and killed Muslims. In Sudan, they assisted Bashirs men in the slaughter of non-Arab Muslims and Christians. In Iraq, they were the driving force of the Sunni insurgency that targetted Shia Muslims (between 30% and 40% of all suicide bombings in the early years of Iraq were claimed by Zarqawi.) They have targetted Muslims in the Phillipines over U.S. Marines because they are easier targets. In Afghanistan they target Muslim schools where women are teachers and Muslim villages that have proven to lean towards a non-Tali-Ban prescription.

But these are the types of guys that are fighting in the defense of Islam and their homelands, right? That's what they declare anyway. Strange how the vast majority of apathetic Muslims look away as these guys shout the loudest and claim to speak for their religion. It's not us that labels them "Islamic" terrorists. They do this themselves.

Study harder.

The atmosphere of the Middle East is not conducive to free speech or open expression. Especially in the tribal areas where family ties are a matter of life and death.

Study harder? You just haven't figured it out yet have you? I'm aware of this region. I've obsesssed over it for almost two decades. I've seen it over and over. I've also seen the apathy and the utter conflict of determining what a "good" Muslim is from one country to the next. You make a Western mistake in assuming your outlook on life is the same as another region's. "Family ties," which is a kind way of stating "Tribal and Clan ties," is precisely why this region is absolutely screwed up and a mass producer of religious terror.

Furthermore, most people in the area frankly dont CARE; it's not their problem. They're busy dodging bombs and trying to feed their families. Geopolitics takes a backseat when the table is empty.

Of course many of them are merely nine-to-fivers. But you make the same Western mistake. Most people in this region very much care about these issues. They are religiously tied to them. They are tribally tied to them. They unite in their hatred over Israel. They are apathetic towards the slaughter of their own by their own, yet complain wildly when outsiders defend themselves against them. They are united to the same Middle Eastern Arab propaganda machine.

And this is their problem because this enemy comes fro throughout the region where their children attend school and graduate with absolutely no prospects or opportunity other than pleasing God. And who declares to please God with the greatest passion in Islam?

Frankly I think it's a little arrogant to expect people living in survival mode to drop what they're doing and massage your ideological ego.

Ego? Survival mode? I don't care if this entire region goes directly to hell in a ball of flames tomorrow. The problem for me is that their wrecked societies are effecting my countrymen and until they fix it they will be a threat upon them. The few that are in survival mode are so because of their apathy. You don't get to come along and pretend that they don't have a history of standing by and doing nothing and now are mindless innocent children who are incapable of taking responsibility for themselves and their culture.

Ideology has nothing to do with it. It's a fact that dictators and religious dogma in the Middle East no longer work to make them behave nicely. If they won't fix themsleves then they get help from those they threaten.

Actually those reports werent acted on because it was assumed that nothing would come out of it. And it's easy in hindsight to criticize for the information not being acted on but consider that for every Osama, there are probably five others with a group of followers and some weapons dreaming of nuking LA who are politically and militarily insignificant.

No...you have it wrong because you are guessing again. I know this because you are assuming with words like "probably" and "hindsight." [ame="http://www.amazon.com/America-Between-Wars-11/dp/1586484966"]America Between the Wars[/ame] is a book that details the events and foriegn policies between 11/9 and 9/11.

President Clinton knew very well about Bin Laden and his threat to Americans. But Democrats laughed at the improbability and Republicans had the nation concerned more about Monika Lewinski. He couldn't convince anybody in this country of this threat. But after 9/11 people demanded to know why we didn't know and later eased their own stupidity by announcing that "hindsight is twenty-twenty?!" Up until 1998, the Pentagon and the CIA were scrubbing intel reports because the White House was too politicially correct to read reports about a religion. Many reports were even sent back to the Pentagon by White House officials just to "lighten" up the wording. Do you really want to pass off that after the military was attacked over and over that people didn't know of this threat?

The "hindsight" argument merely eases the ignorance people celebrated before the fact.

Russia has an internal problem, which is to be solved by Russians. Their McVeighs happen to be our Bin Ladens. Sucks to be them, but culture is fate. Our enemies are terrorists who cross borders and oceans and target all who are in opposition with their diety or refuse to give them the freedom to murder and slaughter on the international stage in the name of that diety. Dictators covered the earth in the 1940s, but Adolph kind of stood out didn't he? Makes no sense to make a blanket statement about terrorism these days as if nothing stands out.

Practical Terrorist versus Apocalyptic Terrorist.

No the Russians do not have McVeigh's because our boy McVeigh atacked his own people and his own government. The "Russians" at thsi point in time are being slapped back by the captive people who the Russians incorporated by force into the Russian empire. These minorty populations such as the Chechens only want to "TAKE THEIR COUNTRY BACK" so they are patriots but it's the Russians who are the terrorists. The fact that the Chechens are Mus;im is an accident of history. The fight is the people who deserve to be free and independent against the terrorist barbaric imperialistic Russians. Nothing else.
