College Students Want 'Our Lord' Phrase Off Diplomas

So, you want schools to teach about Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam?

I have actually taken a few classes that teach about those religions. One was a Comparative Religion class which was really interesting and the other two were both ethic classes.

In high school we didn't learn about them in history or anything like that, but we did have a comparative religion class. It wasn't very detailed though because it was more of a joke senior class.

That doesn't really make sense. We use the BC/AD notation for keeping track of years. AD stand for Anno Dominem which I think means "in the year of our lord".

Exactly, and that is what this is all about. The objection is to the phrase "in the year of our Lord." Anytime you use A.D. in making reference to a year, you are saying the same thing. Next thing they will demand is the removal of AD from all textbooks and uses in the university. Stupid!

But that's just getting kind of anal. We still talk about sunrise and sunset even though we know the sun isn't actually moving around the Earth - so why care about whether our system of time has to do with Jesus or if Jesus was actually born in 0 CE?

Would have been hard to be born in 0 CE as there was no such year...

I think the school should tell the students to go **** themselves. Any logical thinking person would say that if these dumbasses did not want 'Our Lord" on their diplomas then they should not have went to a christian school or a somewhat christian rooted school. What next students going to a hardcore Muslim university and bitching how the women have to hear burkas? Or maybe students at a Jewish school can bitch that they do not have Barbecue pork ribs at any of the dining facilities on the school campus.

Exactly. I teach at a Buddhist school and I am not whining about the fact that we are not permitted to have meat on campus... These kids should get a life...

If this is a private school, then the phrase is perfectly legal and fine and the students have no basis for their argument.

If it is a public school, the exact opposite is true.

Just because it isn't illegal, doesn't mean she doesn't have a legit cause or argument.

The argument i would use is:

"Clearly you are against the phrase Our Lord in your diploma.....you where also signed up to the school with a knowledge of its Christian roots, and as a private school its something we have to respect and its something, had you not have known this at the time, that you should have been aware of if you properly researched it prior to joining the school. Therefore your argument to remove the wording from your diploma has very little sympathy from me and the fact that you should find yourself in the situation of having the phrase Our Lord on your diploma is the fault of nobody other than your own".

Yes actually. Both in lit classes and history they should be taught. Comparative religion classes are not taught enough at the high school level, but it would be appropriate there as well.

I teach about Christianity, Hinduism, and Islam in a historical context in my high school classes in addition to Buddhism... Why SHOULDN'T they be taught in school?

I wish all the goobs who celbrated the end of the 2nd millenium on Dec. 31, 1999 instead of Dec. 31, 2000 would understand that.

Depends on whether you are teaching it, or teaching about it. And whether you know the difference.

I have been fighting this losing battle against the sheep for a decade...

Not a decade yet. On Dec. 31, 2000 it will be a decade.

Liberalism???? Are you SURE that is what it is???? The dude is a muslim. He is part of terrorist religion.

OR.... could it just be an athiest movement?
Are most atheists liberal or conservative?

Of course I know the difference, and I am teaching BOTH because without understanding the basics of the faith, you can't truly understand the history that these faiths relate to nor can you understand their importance in the world today.

NO clue. I think it would be a shame to not teach it. Especially in a history class, where you cannot understand why things happened without that knowledge.

By the way, I loved history in high school. A good history teacher is a great thing.

I completely agree. After taking both the Comparative Religion and ethic classes it changed my view of each religion, but also what I should change in my life to be a better person. I found Buddhism very peaceful and calming and it gave me inner peace. I look forward to taking more history classes with my new knowledge of these religion and hopefully I will have a better understanding of history.

You'd actually be surprised at how close the number is.

Even though that is if you include Libertarians as conservatives (which most people do, but not everyone).

Don't play with logical fallacies again.

(I looked for a poll on this and didn't find one, but I did find a study saying that liberal atheists had the highest average IQ) :2razz:

This is, I believe, a private school.

As such, they are very certainly free to have and keep that phrase.

His taking offense to it does not trump their freedom to express it.

Too bad noone is saying they don't have the freedom to express it.

Glad to see that you agree his complaint is baseless.

His complaint is valid, however, he isn't forcing the school to do anything. He is asking them too. And it is the schools right to refuse that request for change.

I guess in your eyes a customer should NEVER ask a company to do something different, omg the horror.

Hmm. Does that mean a public school would have to remove it?
