Simple - we have very little oil. We have ab out 3% of world production. And prices are set on a world market. If you have only 3% of a market for any product, you aren't going to affect prices. You might do it for a short time, but then you will run out (since oil is not a renewable resource).

OPEC could reduce production by the same amount increase it with this offshore drilling with one conference call, and prices would go back to wherever they want them to be.

And even if it doesn't this will still be a good thing. It means wealth stays circulating in the US and not to foreign countries.
For a short time, yes. That's a different issue though. Have no illusions that we can lower gas prices with domestic production.

Plus if we are energy independent then we won't have to worry about oil embargoes (like what has happened in the past). Energy independence is a good thing and drilling for oil in America is a great step forward.
We have 3% of the worlds' oil. We consume 26% of the world's oil product every year. We have ABSOLUTELY NO HOPE of ever becoming even close to independent of foreign oil. It is an absurd fantasy when you look at the numbers. You might as well try to make us independent of foreign bananas or coffee or mangoes. It just isn't going to happen.

I was shocked when I learned this too. The myth of independence from foreign oil is very common, but it's simply not possible.

Not to mention the new drilling might just offset currant wells that are drying up. It may not add to the total US production at all. It will be a drop in the bucket.

This chart demonstrates my point. It's about the Arctic Refuge oil supply, not offshore, but it has the same visual impact. The Arctic Refuge number is 3.2 billion barrels; the offshore estimate is 5.8 billion barrels, so it's not much different:

Come out of your far-rightie hannity-beck cave and read a newspaper.

It took about a year, but President Obama is finally moving toward center.

Though, to far-righties and that way out there Palin-lovin' fringe, it probably looks like left.

meanwhile, in typically incoherent capacity, president pie-in-the-face's transportation secty, former republican mike lahood, announces his brand new "major policy revision," which calls for giving "bicycling and walking the same policy and economic consideration as driving"

OK LOOK... he portends to allow drilling in the area where the locals have the greatest ire of it... Florida, Gulf Coast, and then bars it from where the locals might actually want it... IE: Alaska.

This is pure gamesmanship, that considering your opinion is working perfectly. He offers something that is not possible to portray himself as moderate and still refuses to allow it where it is locally acceptable.. throwing a bone to to a dead dog, so to speak.

It is good politics but by no measure what America needs.. unfettered access to her own energy reserves.

just own up to it.......it doesn't matter what obama does, you will always find a reason to be a detractor.

I rode my bike to work today. It took me the same time as public transportation or driving. I had no traffic. I will have two workouts done before I get home. I paid nothing for it. I felt great when I got to work, not frustrated from traffic. I was one less car on the road too.

Nobody says EVERYONE should bike to work, but if more people who can, do, everyone benefits because there are fewer cars on the road.

Try it sometime. It's good exercise and good for you mentally. You might not be so angry and incoherent.
