Sarah Palin is expected to raise nearly $200,000 for an appearance on a California State University campus in June. But the school foundation hosting the $500-a-plate event won't say what they are paying her, or even how much the party will cost - and that has angered a San Francisco lawmaker who is using the opportunity to push his bill for greater transparency by public university foundations. …

“At a time when students are struggling to afford an education at CSU, I would hope that spending potentially hundreds of thousands of dollars on a guest speaker for a black-tie gala would be low on the priority list.” — state Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco¹

I think it's shocking and disappointing that any money would need to be expended on speaker fees at this time of budgetary crisis in the California State University system.

“It just seems like an odd choice for a university. If you want a moneymaker, why not Paris Hilton? She has about as much academic value and would probably bring even more money, if that's the goal.” — Lillian Taiz, president of the California Faculty Association, which represents CSU instructors¹

So somebody in San Francisco is pissy that Sarah Palin is speaking in San Francisco and might *gasp* get paid for it. There is absolutely zero evidence that it is exorbitant or beyond normal speaking fees...someone's just got their panties in a bunch because he's being told and he's using the event to push an agenda.

In other news, fish swim and birds fly.

I think this statements speaks to the truth of the matter. Forget the fact that its Palin, the CSU's don't have the money for any guest speakers, unless someone is willing to donate their time, and speak for free.

Has any university in California paid for any speaker? And isn't this a fund raiser? Sometimes you need to lay out some cash to get some decent returns. How do you not understand that?
