Obama makes unannounced trip to Afghanistan

Excerpted from “Obama makes unannounced trip to Afghanistan; The trip, kept secret until Obama was on the ground, was his first to the country as president. He meets with Afghan leader Hamid Karzai to discuss government corruption, benchmarks of progress.” By Laura King and Julian E. Barnes, Los Angeles Times, March 28, 2010 | 10:11 a.m.
President Obama flew into Afghanistan's capital Sunday on an unannounced visit, his first trip as president to a country where tens of thousands of new U.S. troops are being deployed this year. …
We do forget at times of high political rhetoric and controversy here at home that President Obama is also conducting two wars he inherited from the previous administration.

He embraces the role. He campaigned on increasing activity in Afghanistan. It seems like he was well prepared to take on the role of being a war President.

I wonder if President Obama is preparing the ground for the next major push, the battle of Kandahar.

Excerpted from “Kandahar, a Battlefield Even Before U.S. Offensive” By CARLOTTA GALL, The New York Times, Published: March 26, 2010
American forces have begun operations to push back Taliban insurgents in this most important southern province, the birthplace and spiritual home of the Taliban, and a full-scale offensive is expected in coming weeks. …

He doesn't have to fight the wars. Just bring all the troops home right now like the libs wanted during Bush's admin. Interesting how they don't want that anymore...

I still want it. More than ever.
But we have to live in reality. Living in Fantasyland helps no one.
The troops will come home when the job is done; when the Taliban is no longer terrorizing the populace.
At least, most of them will.

Why weren't you guys saying that BEFORE Obama was president???

Chappy, I think after a year in office, the "inherited" schtick is over.

AS a lib, I don't think that is what we were saying. I am pretty sure most of us agreed with and supported the war in Afghanistan. Iraq, not so much. Obama ran on a platform of emphasizing the war in Afghanistan, so he is doing just what he said he would do. Interesting how some have to misrepresent...

First off thank you to your son for serving our country.

I think it is a good thing that President Obama went over to Afghanistan. Obviously there are some things that need to be worked out with the Afghan government. But more importantly I am sure it is good for the troops to be able to see their Commander and Chief and for him to show his support for what they are doing for our country.
