I wish both sides would stop pretending that they don't have their own ridiculous extremist idiots. There are almost equal numbers of people who believe that 9/11 was an inside job or the Barack Obama is actually Kenyan.

That suggests to me that there are similar levels of lunacy on both ends of the spectrum.

Hmm. Your link says the police shot him.

Yep. My friend was a patrol officer at the time. That is the first situation where a bullet solved a problem that came to my mind. But, I can think of others, if you'd like. I'm aware of SEVERAL "problems" that were solved by bullets...permanently.

    This is true.

On the other hand, the right wing loons are the ones walking around on Capitol hill and spitting on congressmen and such right now. They're mostly the ones who are acting on their lunacy. Still doesn't mean that normal rightwingers are to blame for them, but it's why the focus is on them.

It wasn't all that long ago that the leftists were urging armed resistance against military bases, the media, and the gummint on indymedia.org, and tearing up downtown Seattle.

Is that single man the problem? If so, indeed it is solved...permanently.

If the problem is more people like that horrible man remain out there, we have a problem not permanently solved by this particular event.

Horrible story too; I'd like to add. I pray for those families.

But I do sometimes wonder if this would ever happen without the existence of the proposed solution.

    Which is wrong as well.

I think the problem is that when those things happen the media by and large portrays them, CORRECTLY, as kooks and crazed fringe people not representitive of the whole movement. While there's mention of them, usually its a side mention and the focus is on the more positive portion of the message espounged by the ground. For example if there's violence at an anti-war protest it was possibly mentioned, but the main focus of the stories tended to be the numbesr that gathered, their displeasure with the war, etc.

Currently however its not. A lot of the focus is pushing this as if its the norm, as if Limbaugh and others like him somehow directly caused this, that the tea parties are responsable, and that dislike for this bill...which tends to be termed lies and rhetoric...is wrong because it leads to things like this.

While I won't speak for everyone, I know some of us...myself included....is downplaying this in part because they think this kind of stuff shouldn't be that big of a deal (to this scope) in the first place, but also because its disgusting how disproportionate the response to this is compared to what it was in the past and how many of the same groups that gave the ones in the past a pass are now using this to insinuate and besmirch an entire ideological movement.

It goes back to one of my core debate issues. When you exaggerate, trump up, overly harp on, or just plain makeup information then it causes sensible people to have to battle against your idiocy rather than possibly actually join you if you had taken a more realistic approach to it.

That problem is solved. And furthermore, the problem in question was kept from harming additional victims, all through the use of a 50 cent bullet.

Nobody is suggesting that a bullet is going to solve world hunger. But, if a bullet keeps a gunman from shooting 3 more people, that bullet has solved a problem.
