Israel approves new building in east Jerusalem - Business- msnbc.com

The Jerusalem municipality has approved 20 new apartments for Jews in an Arab neighborhood of east Jerusalem, the city said Wednesday, in a move that could stir a new diplomatic crisis with the United States just as Israel's leader is in Washington on a fence-mending visit.

There was no immediate American reaction. But Israeli lawmaker Eitan Cabel accused Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of unnecessarily provoking the U.S.

"Is this another 'unfortunate' mistake? Is this another 'misunderstanding?'" said Cabel, a member of the Labor Party, which sits in the governing coalition.

"Netanyahu decided to spit into Obama's eye, this time from up close. He and his pyromaniac ministers insist on setting the Middle East ablaze."

Cabel is a member of Netanyahu's own party. Apparently, he's come to the same conclusion that I have...that Netanyahu, for whatever reasons, is actually sabotaging his relationships with western nations.

Well, Obama and his administration hasn't been giving Israel exactly what would be called - the warm and fuzzy feelings of past administrations. Politically, this is certainly an escalation to the U.S. and yes, it's a spit in the eye. What will Obama do - turn on Israel in favor of Palestine? Probably not a good political move ... but these escalations have occurred since the 1960's by both Palestine and Israel to bring negotiations back to the table. What better than a crisis to reset the peace process?

i am hoping he will execute an executive order prohibiting any financial or military assistance to israel while any settlements are under construction within the disputed territories

And that would accomplish?

Cabel is a member of the Labor party.

Netanyahu is a member of the Likud party.

The UK Telegraph seems to think he is doing this at this time to try and create a rift between Obama and Congress.

And that would accomplish?

an indication that there are israeli actions the USA does not condone, such as the settlements within the disputed territories

confirmation that the tail no longer wags the dog

an evenhandedness that has not been evident since the Carter administration

evidence to the Palestinian people and others watching that America's foreign policy is returning to one driven by sound principle

It is my duty to inform that Catz is, as usual, giving false information above.
While Netanyahu is from the Likud party, Cabel is from Labor.

Human stupidity never ceases to amaze me. Why get people killed over a damned apartment building? I'd cheerfully support giving Israel enough aid to pay rent for every single moron living in one of these settlements if they moved out.

An Israeli section 8, what an awesome idea!.......

You know I feel for the Israeli people because they and the Palestinians were placed in a no win situation. And then the Israeli government goes and does something like this and it is kind of annoying and makes me rethink how much we should really be helping them.

And **** the only democracy in the ME? How Liberal of you. We all know how Liberals hate democracy.

i thought your side touted that dubya bin lyin is responsible for the democracy found in iraq

and given the limitations on those who are allowed to vote in israel, it would be something of a stretch to identify that as a true democracy

but then, let's not let any facts get in the way of your hyperbole

Actually I was going to go down the route that it was the liberals in the USSR that brought about democracy to the USSR, so they can't hate democracy that much.

I don't think the contriversal construction is, in this case, a "settlement", as that area in question is already "settled".

It's inside a city, so I would assume not.

so, you would have us excuse this illegal construction and displacement of the existing residents because of a semantic distinction

no wonder the expression 'to be jewed' out of something has won widespread acceptance

Because Obama has clearly sided with the Palestinians making demands on Israel never even sought out by Palestinians in the negotiations.

Obama isn't blame free. His administration's ignorance of international politics once again bears fruit.

Unlike what the Obama's administration would like you to believe, Israel has been building in Jerusalem - a land that Israel considers to be, in its whole, its capital - since 1967.

That's 43 years of building in Jerusalem without diplomatic incidents such as the one with the Obama administration.
One has to wonder, then, if Obama is intentionally trying to sabotage the relations between Israel and the US, although such attempts are of course futile.

That is an empty propaganda relying on the readers' lack of knowledge on the election system in Israel.

In reality, the land of the truth, every citizen that holds an Israeli citizenship has an equal voting right.
There are actually quite some Arab members in the Knesset, the Israeli parliament.

No existing residents were displaced, that is yet again an act of empty propaganda.

Inside a city. Inside East Jerusalem which the Palestinians wish to make their capital. We heard that this extra construction is even in a Palestinian area.

It sounds to me that Israel is just shouting very loud that she has no interest in peace.

Both announcements timed to embarrass would seem to indicate that Israel knows that she is in for problems for going against what she said but is relying on Congress to also not be interested in peace in the ME and to go against Obama.

If only because you lack the ability to understand.

This construction, as were all of the constructions in East Jerusalem in the last 43 years, was approved because Israel refers to the area as an Israeli land, annexed by Israel in 1967 and being Israeli ever since.

Building in Jerusalem in Israeli eyes is no different than building in Tel-Aviv, and it's not a new issue, and certainly this was not started by the current administration.

Your claim that the approval of 20 apartments in east Jerusalem means that Israel is not interested in peace is completely ignorant of the fact that Israel has been doing this for quite a long time, and is not intending to stop.
