GOP Lawmaker Darrell Issa Poised to Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate White House

GOP Lawmaker Darrell Issa Poised to Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate White House - Political Hotsheet - CBS News

Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the House Oversight committee, told CBS News Wednesday that he will call for a special prosecutor to investigate the White House if it does not address Rep. Joe Sestak's claim that he was offered a federal job in exchange for dropping out of the Pennsylvania Senate primary.

"If the public doesn't receive a satisfactory answer, the next step would be to call for a special prosecutor, which is well within the statute," Issa (pictured) told Hotsheet.

The California Republican has been pushing for the White House to provide details of conversations between Sestak and administration officials in the wake of Sestak's comment during a radio interview last month that he was offered a high-ranking administration job in exchange for dropping his primary challenge against Sen. Arlen Specter.

Asked if that job was secretary of the Navy, Sestak declined to comment. His press secretary told CBS News that the lawmaker stands by his original statement that he was offered the job in exchange for an administration post. Sestak did not drop out of the race.

ruh roh shaggy, seems transparency stops at the point of bribery.......

If true, what do you think of this chicago style back room dealing?

Re: GOP Lawmaker Darrell Issa Poised to Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate Wh

So far its a completely unconfirmed accusation. Still, I welcome investigation, as Sestak would then have to speak under oath.

Me too. I would like to hear the White House's response to this question.

I think it it is a standard political procedure not specifc to Chicago. Or the Democrats. I think Darrel Issa is looking to sensationalize a routine practice into a scandal.

I would only have a problem with it if Sestak was being offered a position he was unqualified for.

Wow! If that's not a telling statement. Not bothered by the allegation that Sestak was offered a job to affect the outcome of an election? Really?

Re: GOP Lawmaker Darrell Issa Poised to Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate Wh

I don't see what the problem is. Politicians do this all the time and if a candidate would rather work in an agency than in congress, that's fine.

That's pretty much how I feel about it. I don't think it really affects the hypothetical outcome of a hypothetical election between two hypothetical candidates. Now if it was an offer to drop out of a race in progress that one party or the other was losing, then I might have some issues.

If there is evidence of illegal actions, investigate it and prosecute the guilty.

I doubt there will be much evidence of illegal actions here, but none of us really knows the details beyond hearsay stuff.

He'll change his tune under oath, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be more truthful.

Why should I care? Elections are sensational and dramatic shows won by force of personality, resources, and luck. Actual ability, when it is present, tends to be lost among the bland talking points. Elections work better than having some oligarchic committee of elites picking our rulers, but not by all that much -- the people who would have been the oligarchic elites still exist and find ways to factor in the preferences of the electorate into their plans so that most political outcomes are acceptable to them, to the general disavantage of the non-oligarchic types. In fact, the preferences of the electorate are often instilled into them (one way or another) by the oligarchics.

He'll change his tune under oath, but that doesn't necessarily mean that he'll be more truthful.

Facing criminal charges is a good incentive not to lie. With his ass on the line, he'd need a big motivation to lie under oath. Its not 100% effective, but a lot more reliable than trusting the word of politician not under oath...

Re: GOP Lawmaker Darrell Issa Poised to Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate Wh

Because, if true, it's illegal.

By the language of what law?

I want to know because I want to know exactly what the prerequisite of illegality is.

Anyway, the White House already responded to Sesak by empathetically denying the accusation. That's a satisfactory answer unless there is additional evidence.

Using that logic, the Bush admin denying the intentional deletion of emails should have satisfied you, but a very quick review of your past emails seems not to support that.

BTW, this is an emphatic denial?
