Popes Child Abuse Apology Letter Released

Pope says 'sorry' for Irish church abuse

(CNN) -- Pope Benedict XVI said Saturday he is "truly sorry" for the abuse suffered by victims at the hands of Catholic priests in Ireland.

The pope directly addressed the church abuse crisis that has rocked the Irish Catholic Church in an 18-page letter, which was made public Saturday. It is expected to be read in churches across Ireland on Sunday.

"I have been deeply disturbed by the information which has come to light regarding the abuse of children and vulnerable young people by members of the church in Ireland, particularly by priests and religious," the pope wrote

At least there is beggining to be more admission of these abuses by the church. Hopefully now that the situation can be talked about openly in the next few years, it can be iradicated once and for all.

Well I guess that makes everything all better than, the Pope apologized.

That apology and a dollar will get you a soda out of a vending machine.

Much much more needs to be done with that apology.

He issued a letter? He couldn't even come out and say it himself?

Also, I know the Irish abuses were particularly severe, but the problem was worldwide, especially among the British colonies. Why is he only apologizing for Ireland and not anywhere else?

It's a start, but I want to see more.

Good luck with that. The Catholic Church is only acknowledging these abuses now. It will take at least another 10-20 years until they take actions with any meaning to the victims.

CBC News - World - 'Tsunami' of German Catholic abuse cases

This is an example. Right now there are 120 cases in Germany after the recent creation of a sex abuse task force by the Church. The current Pope was an Archbishop in Germany during the period of the allegations, and refused to deal with it.

We are not going to get very much out of this guy.

The apology was to Irish Roman Catholics, so it is neither extended to the rest of the world, nor to the Irish victims of the priesthood who have left the church. Other than that, it ignores the complicity of the church in hiding the perpetrators. It's simply too little, too late.

They turned the other way and allowed for the abuse of innocent children. It digusts me, and the abuse was the last straw that caused me to leave the Catholic church and was what turned me into a true atheist. What effing hypocrites. I wish I believed in hell so I could relish the idea of the abusers and those who looked the other way burning in hell.
