I haven't read through the thread, but I am forced to wonder whether the incident was frightening or upsetting for any children- of any race- who happened to be in the store at the time.

Seriously, I walked into a Wal-Mart once. The store was boring and dirty and the people shopping inside had to be the ugliest people that I had ever seen in my life. Seriously....there wasn't anyone who was even half-way decent looking inside. If I hadn't been with my sister in Law who was leaving the country and needed to pick up travel supplies, I would have turned around and left.

It was truly a horrifying experience.
Contrast that with Trader Joe's. One time I was there I'd swear there wasn't a woman under an "8".

I think Trader Joe's sells "Jordashe" jeans, while Wal-Mart sells "Lardass" jeans. LOL.

I bet most of the people in the store laughed at the absurdity of the situation.
He touched her over her bra and underpants, she says, and guided her hand to touch him over his underwear

If children laughed, it was no doubt out of confusion, discomfort, and fear.
As a parent, I can't imagine having to explain that one.

"It was supposed to be a joke."
"But why is it funny? I don't get it."

I think it would have been funnier if they had used the word negro, because that's a funny word.

Had I been in that store when it happened, I'd have been disturbed, though.

I think that it was funny in a sick sort of way !!! It could have been a hospital and the annoucement was for "all sick people leave now"

or at a FUNERAL PALOR "all dead people please make your final exit , now" ...

I have lost a lot of respect for a few people here.

It was not funny for the people in the store. It was demeaning and hateful even for a joke. I wonder if an elderly person from the wonderful Jim Crow era was in the store. I am certain they thought it was a laugh riot.

It has nothing to do with getting a sense of humor or being wound tight, it has to do with having some respect for people around you. Something this country is loosing fast. I am not even talking about politically correct crap or real humor either.

    I thought about that too.
Even for people of my dad's generation- mid-to-late 50s- who grew up in the South, it's not funny. It's not funny. People lost their lives over it, and half the people living today are old enough to remember those times, and this sort of joke must stir up many ghosts for those people.
And again, for children who were present, I'm sure it was bewildering and possibly frightening.

The only people I can imagine finding such a thing "funny" are teens and really dumb people in their 20s and 30s; or maybe yankees who have never lived down south.

Whatever marginal amusement such people may have derived from said "joke", it's not worth the potential pain and upset it no doubt caused others who were present.

I suspect people wouldn't be laughing if the announcement had instructed all Jews to leave the store.

Could not have put it better myself.

Don't get me wrong either. What Jallman did was funny, he did not know the family was behind him and the family did over react if they were giving him the evil eye.

The announcement over the PA was just so wrong.

I grew up in segregated Chicago, it's not funny.
