Reid's Wife, Daughter Injured in Accident

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid's wife and daughter were being treated in a hospital Thursday for serious injuries they sustained when their vehicle was rear-ended by a truck, a spokesman said.

Reid's wife, Landra, 69, broke her back and neck in the accident, Reid spokesman Jim Manley said.

She and the couple's adult daughter, Lana, were being treated at Inova Fairfax Hospital in suburban Virginia. Neither woman's injuries appeared to be life-threatening, Manley said.

''While driving on a Washington, D.C., highway, their vehicle was rear-ended by a semi-truck,'' Manley said in a statement.

Don't agree with his politics but prayers go out to his family for their health and speedy recovery.

Ditto. Got no use for Reed, politically, but I hope his family is ok.

I got rear-ended by a semi-truck once. Scary stuff... ten tons of steel eighty feet long has beaucoup momentum.

I hate driving by trucks for this exact reason. I hope they recover fully and my thoughts go out to both of them and Reid himself.
 
Hopefully everything and everyone will be okay with the Reid family.
 
A absolutely abhor Harry Reid, and I hope he is voted out of office later this year, but I feel for him and his family during this tough and trying time. I hope they make a full recovery and Harry is unemployed come next January.
 
I make it a point not to involve family in politics, and won't do so here. I wish a speedy recovery for Mr. Reid's wife and daughter even though I detest him personally.
 
Can anybody explain this accident to me? How do you get rear ended on a highway? Were they standing still? That just seems like a weird accident to have on a highway.

I caught the end of the story on the news. It appears it was a semi that hit them, either he was speeding to make a bonus for time or they may have had to brake hard and suddenly and he could have been too close to stop. Those are the first things that come to my mind.

I've seen traffic on an interstate at 40 mph, or even dead stopped, for no apparent reason. A big truck, doing just 65 mph, coming upon a vehicle doing 50 can make one helluva impact.

Or, most probably, he had his head in his ass and wasn't paying attention to what was going on far enough ahead of him.

Possibly, I was giving the semi driver the benefit of the doubt.

Mrs. Reid broke her neck, her back, and her nose. Was she wearing her seat belt? I hope so, but judging from her injuries, something tells me she was not.

My older sister broke her neck back in 1985 (she fell asleep at the wheel and crashed into a stone wall). She was not wearing her seat belt and has suffered from problems as a result of that accident.

The accident report had Mrs. Reid and daughter as buckled up if I remember correctly.

Yup. I read that in a local website after I posted my question. I wonder if the airbag did that to her. That sucks.
 
with any luck, harry will soon be back home full time to give them all of the care and attention they deserve

I also hate being tailgated by trucks for this reason. Like others before me, I wish his family good health and a speedy recovery.

This happens quite a bit if you are tailgating and something happens that requires you to slow or stop suddenly and the driver of the tailgating vehicle doesn't leave himself enough room to stop. Happens here a lot with bus drivers. Some NASTY accidents.

I got hit like that once. The idiot in the second car ahead of me decided he wanted to turn left and braked suddenly. The driver in front of me and I were able to stop in time, unfortunately for me, the one behind me didn't. Lucky for me, I drove a mid-size SUV while she drove a sedan, so her front was bent out of shape while my bumper was relatively unscathed. That's why I'll always go for the big car when I'm driving in the US. :mrgreen:

I have never had that happen to me, but I can imagine it would be scary as hell.
 
I personally send my best to the Reid family, thank God reports are coming in that they can feel their extremities, I think his wife will recover with difficulty, looks like the daughter will recover fully and this truck driver needs to be slammed with the full rule of law if he was speeding or reckless in any way, our roads filled with those that don't appreciate the risk they incur when getting behind a wheel and we all seem to think we're Jimmie Johnson upon seatblet buckling, myself included in that.

Now...there was a thread recently where protestors waited outside cemetaries howling at parents burying dead soldiers, telling the parent that God hated their children and that's why they're dead.

I believe a court ruling is imminent in this free speech issue, it's a topic of discussion on Debatepolitics in another forum as well.

So...say protestors were waiting for Reid with signs concerning his wife and/or daughter with similar God hates them because...oh say....he's for abortion funding in the health care bill....is that free speech as many argue the protestors heckling military parents was? If the news had been more dire for Senator Reid....if for example he was informed of a death...as the parents of these military personnel had been informed......would such a heckling on Senator Reid be free speech?

Just wonderin.
