Two months after ending his annual State of the Black Union conference, Tavis Smiley is gathering African-American advocates to press the case for a "black agenda."

The decision was motivated by what Smiley called recent statements from some black leaders downplaying the need for President Barack Obama to specifically help African-Americans.

"I was compelled to do it because of this debate," the activist and PBS talk show host said Wednesday.

The panel discussion will be March 20 at Chicago State University. Panelists include advertising pioneer Tom Burrell, professors Michael Eric Dyson and Cornel West, Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan, the Rev. Jesse Jackson, and Bennett College President Julianne Malveaux.

The Associated Press: PBS host Smiley calls meeting to urge black agenda

I've always known Smiley was an out and out racist but he just solidified it with putting in a racist anti Semite like Farrakhan and claiming this guy should be part of "Black Union"

Just in case people don't remember who Farrakhan is:

"The Jews don't like Farrakhan, so they call me Hitler. Well, that's a good name. Hitler was a very great man. He rose Germany up from the ashes." -- Louis Farrakhan (1984) who campaigned for congresswoman Cynthia McKinney in 2002

"Now that nation called Israel, never has had any peace in forty years and she will never have any peace because there can never be any peace structured on injustice, thievery, lying and deceit and using the name of God to shield your dirty religion under his holy and righteous name." -- Louis Farrakhan who campaigned for congresswoman Cynthia McKinney in 2002, 1984

*Hip Hop Republican*: Top Racist Democrat Quotes

Minister Louis Farrakhan, speaking at the Saviours Day convention of the Nation of Islam, says the “white right” wants to make sure Obama is a one-term president. He says the proof is opposition to health care.

Louis Farrakhan Says The “White Right” Wants Obama Out Alan Colmes' Liberaland

And my personal favorite:

Farrakhan is not just a racist, but a divine one at that. During his speech, he recalled his time in 1985 when he boarded a Biblical-style UFO, or wheel. The wheel took him to a mother wheel, where an unseen Elijah Muhammad, the former leader of the Nation of Islam, spoke to him about the future. Now apparently, this was not a mother wheel created by aliens or angels but a “human-built planet.”

This is who Tavis Smiley is putting on a panel to discuss Black Union?

Thats like having David Duke on a panel to talk about "White Union"

But of course any panel discussing white union is already racist anyway :2wave:

Why should Obama pander to these people? He has their vote in his pocket, and too close of visible alliance with them will hurt his chances for reelection.

Obama needs to worry about keeping the moderate white vote. The far left and the Black vote are firmly in his camp.

Tavis Smiley is an idiot. I used to listen to his show on NPR at nights on the way home from college classes as a form of entertainment during a long drive. The only thing useful about his show is that it provides a fun distraction to yell at him through the radio for mispronouncing every third word.

The vast majority of blacks have contributed unflagging support to one political party for the past 40 years, and have very little to show for it other than empty promises. Perhaps a "black union" is the only way these voters will be able to compete for the affections of the president.

Maybe Blacks would be better served by imitating the Jews that Farrakhan so despises. They never got any leg up by government, but fought their way to the top through hard work and education.

Unfortunately, after 40 years of pandering and "victim" politics we have ensconced within the community a belief that success or failure is largely determined by chance or at best, by others.

One thing did get my attention;
Some black politicians and activists have recently begun to question Obama's longtime stance that helping the overall economy will improve the fortunes of blacks who are disproportionately poor and unemployed.

Blacks are disproportionately poor and unemployed because the fell for the democrat propaganda that all the problems are caused by white people wanting to keep them down and they will never be able to break free of welfare and underemployment so they need to suport the Dmocrats who are there to help.

Truth is the Democrats fought tooth and nail to halt or slow down integration and they started the KKK now people like Farrakhan, Rev. Wright, Jesie Jackson, Smiluey and other exploit what the Democrats have created for their own ends.

Black people who learn from an early age from enlightened parents that they can do what ever they put their minds to do well only some decide to use what they learn to exploit their fellow citizens.

Obama is no better than The one I named when it comes to pandering.

OP
Uck - so racism hasn't gone away, it's just shifted.

It doesn't look like Obama is pandering to these people, they in fact criticize him about it in one of those links.

I just love the fact that PBS employs a well known racist.
