As another pilot I am going to have to agree with Deuce on this one. It was idiotic that this guy was disciplined at all.

Oh my God, man! How did you keep your plane in the air? Do you know how irresponsible that is? Planes could have collided, people could have died ... you could have very literally ushered in Armageddon!!!!1! You could have killed us all!!!!

Someone certainly should have been fired. Or at least been given a stern talking to.

Yes, definitely at least stern, perhaps even implacable.

The planes the kid was talking to already had their instructions for departure, so no actual clearances were issued besides the takeoff, which obviously occurred at the time coordinated by the Tower Dad and the departure control.

God damn I hate the media.
Agreed. Although I don't think the kid should have done it he didn't do any actual directing. He simply spoke into the mike what his dad told him to say.

What I don't get is why this guy thought this would be a good idea at all.

Once in flight school I was laconic.

    Shouldn't have happened.

This was my first thought as well. There was a serious lapse of judgment involved on that guy's part. Not so much because what he was doing was really dangerous or anything, but because he didn't think of how people would react. He really should have known better.
