    Russia's Olympic 'humiliation'

    Link
    BBC Sport - Vancouver 2010 - Russia's Olympic 'humiliation'

Quoted from article(Mr Putin is a fanatical sportsman. He has vowed repeatedly to rebuild Russia's sporting prowess.

Russian sports officials thought they had created a secret formula. Spend millions on PR, and promise athletes top dollars for winning. It turns out it takes more than this to win medals

    Russian commentator

Over the past 10 years his government has spent millions of dollars on new training programmes. Now people are starting to ask why there is nothing to show for it. )

Because it takes more than money to create a world class sportsperson.

Of course Russia could continue it's march back to Stalinism and the COMMAND economy, it seemed to work for Russia during those times.

It's tough trying to win without steroids.

    Re: Russia's Olympic 'humiliation'

I'm no fan of Putin in any sense but the people of Russia are basically the same as people all over the world and they want the same things I would guess and to say that because they that didn't do as well as past Olympic teams they were humiliation is, I think wrong.

Disappointed yes, hoping to fare better, or any number of was to describe what happened.

Russia has yet to recover from the collapse and break up of the USSR and their economic system is still a royal mess. The people in general are in poor financial shape and even though the government is spending millions on training etc the pool of citizens to draw from have been greatly reduced.

It is a bit sad that they resorted to claiming poor judging to account for not winning in men's figure skating, but making it to the games to compete is a life long challenge and anyone from anywhere should be proud and have nothing to feel Humiliated about.

That is unless you the Jamaican Bobsled Team of 1988 but even humiliation ended in a great deal of fun for everyone else.

But hasn't there been a history of unfair judging against them in the recent past?

You mean to make up for all the years of cheating under the USSR? I hope so.

I met a dancer from Russia. She was very nice. I hope the Russian people can find a way to keep getting screwed by the people in power. On one hand, their Soviet system of Communism caused their economic collapse, but on the other hand most of the businessmen in Russia used to be criminals and gangsters during the Soviet-era so they have to learn how capitalism works with laws (or so I heard). Getting caught between communist totalitarians and corrupt businessmen is a tough vice to be squeezed by.

I wish nothing but the best for the Russian people.

The Russian politicians, on the other hand...
