Pelosi: Lawmakers Should Sacrifice Jobs for Health Care

Looks to me that Pelosi, sitting in her very secure seat representing ultra-liberal San Francisco, is only too happy to throw her Democratic colleagues under the train in order to advance her own political agenda. She's a real sport, isn't she?

I don't quite get her rationale here. They are elected representatives who are supposed to represent the will of the people of their own districts, right? They aren't supposed to represent the will of Nancy Pelosi's district, correct? But, Pelosi seems to think that other Democratic lawmakers should go against the will of the people of their own districts in order to pass a law that will cause them to get voted out of office, all for the good of the American people who don't want the law passed.

FOXNews.com - Pelosi: Lawmakers Should Sacrifice Jobs for Health Care

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi urged her colleagues to back a major overhaul of U.S. health care even if it threatens their political careers, a call to arms that underscores the issue's massive role in this election year.

Lawmakers sometimes must enact policies that, even if unpopular at the moment, will help the public, Pelosi said in an interview being broadcast Sunday the ABC News program "This Week."
"We're not here just to self-perpetuate our service in Congress," she said. "We're here to do the job for the American people.

Were I one of the Democrats, I'd gather some support from fellow Democrats who are being asked to be thrown under the bus and counter-propose Pelosi. We'd all gladly get thrown under the bus if Pelosi would in front of the media and in writing, resign her post as Speaker of the House, immediately after the vote and never again run for public office.

Wonder if she'd be so happy at that prospect.
“I think if Thomas Jefferson were looking down, the author of the Bill of Rights, on what’s being proposed here, he’d agree with it. He would agree that the First Amendment cannot be absolute.” - Chuck Schumer (D). Yet, Madison and Mason wrote the Bill of Rights, according to Sheila Jackson Lee, 400 years ago. Yup, it's a fact.

Hey, I might support the bill if she'd agree to your terms!

Pelosi may well be helping to stop this phony Heath Bill with her screw the rest of you attitude. She also may be talking herself out of the top job.

In both cases it's a win, win for the rest of us.

One really has to wonder what is going on here. I have said since the top of this BS Health crap came up that it was about crashing the economy and that was before i learned more about the Coward & Piven Strategy of destroying the economy as part of a plan to move toward Communism.

It sure seems that Obama is a not only a Muslim at heart but he was raised in a communist atmosphere, with his mother being a died in the woll communist.

Speaker Pelosi said, "We're here to do the job for the American people."

It seems to me that she's trying to do a job on the American people.

Nope, but you started talking about President Obama and his mother, and neither of them are the topic of this thread. Debate threads get messy when people get off-topic.

Actually, I didn't talk at all about Obama and his mother. I started the thread. Maybe you ought to pay attention better?

As far as Obama and his upbringing, I do believe that he grew up in an atmosphere steeped in radical thought, and that that may have something to do with his tendency toward socialism. Obama is a big party of this political equation, and he also stated that the Democrats should push through this legislation and let the chips fall where they may in the upcoming elections.

Wary Centrists Posing Challenge in Health Care Vote

This is not about Nancy Pelosi. It's fundamentally about doing something right and necessary for our country with regard to health care reform.

Today 45,000 Americans die prematurely because of the current American system leaves them out at a critical time in their lives; and, more and more of us working people are being left out; and for those people who are still eligible are finding health coverage cost increases escalating every year; and, all the incentives within the system create unnecessary costs while not really promoting a more healthful society.

We have the best health care system in the world if you can afford it. More and more of us can't.

I disagree that elected representatives to congress should simply poll their constituencies and vote whichever way the polls fall. We didn't elect automatons. We elected people with independent judgment. Our representatives should use that judgment to legislate what is best for our country.

Passing Obama's plan is the right thing to do. It's time for our elected representatives to use their judgment and pass the bill.

Excerpted from “Wary Centrists Posing Challenge in Health Care Vote” By SHERYL GAY STOLBERG and ROBERT PEAR, The New York Times, Published: February 27, 2010
The future of President Obama’s health care overhaul now rests largely with two blocs of swing Democrats in the House of Representatives — abortion opponents and fiscal conservatives — whose indecision signals the difficulties Speaker Nancy Pelosi faces in securing the votes necessary to pass the bill.

With Republicans unified in their opposition, Democrats are drafting plans to try on their own to pass a bill based on one Mr. Obama unveiled before his bipartisan health forum last week. His measure hews closely to the one passed by the Senate in December, but differs markedly from the one passed by the House.

That leaves Ms. Pelosi in the tough spot of trying to keep wavering members of her caucus on board, while persuading some who voted no to switch their votes to yes — all at a time when Democrats are worried about their prospects for re-election. …
