ATHENS—Tens of thousands of Greeks took to the streets Wednesday as much of the country went on a 24-hour strike against government austerity measures.
Protesters clash with riot police during a demonstration in Athens on Wednesday. Greece ground to a halt as unions staged a one-day general strike and thousands of demonstrators took to the streets to protest austerity measures designed to tame a public debt crisis.
A small group of youths threw Molotov cocktails at police, who responded with tear gas. However, the 20,000 people who filed through downtown Athens—a relatively large crowd for a Greek strike—mostly limited themselves to chanting anti-government slogans.
Public- and private-sector unions called the strike to protest a range of measures aimed at reducing Greece's budget deficit. The government has announced a freeze on civil-service wages, cuts in public-sector entitlements and the closing of tax loopholes for certain professions, including some civil servants. It has also announced a fuel-tax increase.

I think Europe is in deep trouble, this isn't the end of this sort of thing.

I have heard more than one Economic Expert say that if Obama doesn't get the message very soon and reduce the spending and cut taxes we are not far from a similar Economic melt down.

I am baffled that Obama, Pelosi and, Reid have been allowed to continue down this path to destruction when history clearly shows that TAX & SPEND is exactly the wrong way to go.

We had better wake up and stop the madness and the place to start id with this phony Health Care nonsense. If passed it will put us on a down hill slide we may not be able to recover from without going into a worse situation than Greece is now in.

Now you know why China is freaked out, cause they're next.

Once we witness debt eclipse GDP, it will be a strong indication to pull in some of that spending and raise income taxes. Of course, doing so before we see unemployment decrease dramatically is jumping the gun. World economies are on a stimulus I V.

To be fair, Greece is having their fiscal discrepancy because of a slowed economy that has led to weak revenues. Unlike the worlds most developed economies, they do not have the "ammunition" to constantly allow a budgetary shortfall.

Stimulus like ours are artificial and lack real substance. The govt needs to remove itself and let the private sector sort it out, that's how capitalism works. Economies have cycles as do most things, and trying to change them is impossible and only delays the inevidible.

You are exactly right our current economy is barely hanging on by a thread and it not getting better. So far there are claims that jobs have been created in Congressional Districts that don't exist.

Obama claims 2 million jobs but the fact is no one is hiring and no new businesses are being created.

Only 1/3 of the $787 billion stimulus money has been spent because they are holding off spending it until just before the Nov. elections to throw some around to make it look like things are better than they are.

There is little hope of Obama changing because he is using the Cloward and Piven Strategy to wreck the economy and pave the way for Socialism on a massive scale and history shows it will collapse completely because people has no incentive to work hard when theu see redistribution of their hard earned money going to those who don't work at all or very little.

It then becomes a race to the bottom.

Glen Beck was discussing the Kondratiev Wave last night, and how we're on a downward slope.

It explains why the Chinese are buying gold.

A meltdown like this will be the excuse PBO uses to sieze power.

Either way the US is headed for the same situation

Greece is facing these strikes becasue of a cut back in government spending

What do you think is going to happen in the US when the various government cut back on medicare/medicaid, unemployement benifits ect.

Overall the US is going to face spending cuts of a very large degree, meaning lots of people with alot less money.

Now unless Americans are a more passive lot then the Greeks or some other European countries, I will expect some mass civil protests. Not so much a nationwide strike, but very large demonstrations

Imagine what those that were upset at the possibility of having "their medicare" being cut to fund socialized medicine (Irony) actually having benifits cut 30% or more.

Yea just like the loonies were saying about Bush.

Bush wasn't intentionally running th economy into the toilet, either.

I hope I'm wrong, but when it happens, remember you heard it here, first.

That is what irks me about you and your lot.... You make all these claims about capitalism and how wonderful markets are. Then to short change your political opposition, you turn your back on the market system and claim that the government has the ability/desire to destroy it.

Hardly seems like a realistic scenario. The economy has been through far more troubling patches in the last year and a half.

I hope I'm wrong, but when it happens, remember you heard it here, first.

And when you are, i bet we wont hear a peep about it.

I am sorry I just can't see Obama, making a play to be dictator of the US.

Got to be the fastest thread ever going from on a topic in a different country to bashing Obama.. happened in the OP..
