CBC News - Money - GM to shut down Hummer after deal collapses

Hummer, the off-road vehicle that once symbolized America's love for hulking SUVs, has hit a dead end after its planned sale to a Chinese heavy equipment maker collapsed late Wednesday.

Heavy equipment maker Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machines Co. pulled out of the deal for Hummer, known for its military-like SUVs, because it was unable to get clearance from Chinese regulators within the proposed deal timeframe, the manufacturer said in a separate statement.A long row of unsold H3s sit at a Hummer dealership in Castle Rock, Colo., in 2008.A long row of unsold H3s sit at a Hummer dealership in Castle Rock, Colo., in 2008. GM said it will continue to honour existing Hummer warranties.

Someone in the comments section said it best:

"Bye Hummer - won't miss you, but be happy that your products will be held up to future generations as icons of a absurd and dangerously self-centered age."

Feigned outraged, as though someone will read this thread one day and admire you for it.

The Hummer is just a GM's Suburban frame with a fake Humvee like skin and almost non of the Humvee's abilities. Mostly they have been a waste of money.

If someone wants a real Humvee they will still be around for a while and they are not made by GM as some thought when talk of the China deal first surfaced.

I don't think they'll be missed either. I'd have call this no big deal.

This is a serious win for sexual innuendo. From now on a hummer will only be a sex act.

Can't believe it took them this long to shut it down.

I honestly thought they were ugly cars and never understood why some one would want one. When my neighbor got one my father and I just mocked him constantly.

All those jobs gone bye-bye. That's something to get excited about.

And, the wonderful little green cars that were supposed to take the place of the evil SUV turn out to be death traps.

Looks like everybody loses to the green movement.

Oh Lord, has Sex Education Hour come round again?

Go on, tell me what "Hummer" means nasty-wise.

The market speaks and you complain about job losses.

The market speaks and you complain about job losses.

The market didn't speak. The government and the economy spoke.

If you'll recall, not long ago the market was telling us it wanted Hummers.

In fact, it was such a flop, that a Chinese company wanted to buy the brand and produce it for sell in the United States...:rofl

Oh no!!! What are the assholes who drive like they own the road and take up three parking spots going to do? A sad day indeed for these loser drivers. :2razz:

A hummer doesn't take up three spots.

Oh gee, what am I going to do today in my lifted f150 and 2 feet of falling snow?

Laugh at all those losers drivers stuck on the side of the road in thier Priuses! ;)

Yeah, all the Priuses were floated off during Hurricane Katrina.

Besides, you can't pull a horse trailer with a Prius, which makes it purdy much useless.

Obviously the market has spoken, as people are no longer buying these gas guzzlers. If their performance was so critical to people's survival in harsh conditions, GM wouldn't be canceling the entire line.

For harsh snow conditions, it's called: winterizing. Look it up.

You can't haul 4 fatties in a prius.

That's not surprising.... not much happens when two roller skates bump into each other.

And that's kind of a good thing, no? Of course, that means that roller skates are starting to look damn good, eh?
