Oh, well. It's too late now. Does it cost to call the morgue?

What a ludicrous idea. Don't we already pay for 911 service on our regular phone bills?

What about calling 911 on the cell to report a drunko weaving down the highway, does that cost $300 too?
    It does sound ridiculous.

I called 911 recently to report an erratic driver on the interstate. I certainly wouldn't use the service if I was charged $300.

Re: Tracy Residents Now Have To Pay For 911 Calls

Providing emergency services is pretty much a basic responsibility of government so I don't see how they can get away with this.

However, they certainly ought to charge for frivolous 911 calls. For example, and this is a true story, I know this old man (who was a complete moron) that literally called 911 because he had a large splinter in his hand. Emergency services came out and removed it. That is probably worth a $300 fine.

Some states now charge you for backcountry rescues if you are unprepared in the backcountry and need rescue.

That seems more reasonable, to charge for frivolous calls.

I don't know how old people are, but 911 service has only been around for 2 or 3 decades. It used to be that you directly called the ambulance. The idea was to make it simpler and universal. There is a problem with frivolous calls. People should be charged for those.

Now, that I can see. Call 911 when there is no emergency, and pay for the price of the response.

As for backcountry rescues, there is a service you can buy for less than $10 a year if you have a SPOT personal locator. I have one, and carry it whenever going to remote places. It does come with a warning that a frivolous call will cost you dearly, particularly if it results in helicopters being called out.

A Pay phone? Say, there's one, right over there next to the LP vinyl records, in the typewriter section.

There it is, next to the buggy whips.

I always just carry a pint of gin with me on solo backpacking trips. I consider it as part of my first aid kit. I figure that if I am ever in the situation where I have to cut one of my arms off to rescue myself I don't want to be sober for it, and if I am ever so seriously injured out there that I am going to die, once again I don't want to be sober for it.

No date has been set for when the charges will go into effect.

look for this decision to be changed.
