Watchdog: Iran 'may be working on nuclear warhead'

February 18, 2010 3:07 p.m. EST

(CNN) -- Iran may currently be working on secretly developing a nuclear warhead for a missile, the IAEA director general said Thursday in a draft report.

It's the first time that the United Nations' nuclear watchdog agency has issued such a strong warning about current Iranian nuclear activities.

The statement comes in a draft report obtained by CNN. The report, dated Thursday, has not yet been approved by the board of governors of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

The report also said Tehran began enriching uranium to a level at which it can sustain a nuclear reaction before United Nations inspectors arrived to monitor the process, and in defiance of a specific request that it not so do.

The IAEA asked Iran earlier this month not to boost uranium enrichment to 20 percent "before the necessary additional safeguards procedures were in place."

When inspectors arrived the following day, February 10, "they were informed that Iran had already begun to feed the low enriched" uranium into the enrichment machinery "the previous evening."

The United States and its allies have long feared that Iran aims to develop the capacity to build a nuclear bomb. Iran denies it, saying its nuclear program is designed to produce civilian energy and for medical use.

I admit to having thought this happened already but this is the first time the IAEA has reached such a conclusion.

Nor should we think that Iran's first weapon will be something as crude as what we had 1945-1955... because they are probably getting outside help from former-Soviet nuke specialists.

Yup.

Iran will start a nuclear war if we don't get serious. Book it.

Nope. Arms race is more likely, not a nuclear war.

Nobody builds nukes anymore to use them against another nation.

The only reason a nuke was ever used was because the US was the only nation with them. Once everyone else started to get them no one has ever used a nuke because the costs of using one are greater than using one.

Israel made any plans about this? I'm sure they're very afraid of a nuclear Iran. My fear is that if they try to knock out nuclear sites, it can lead to a war between the two, beyond the current proxy war. Would not be pretty.

That's the crux of the argument; whether Iran intends to use their nuke(s) or not.

Or MAYBE whether Iran wants to goad Israel (or the USA or ???) into launching a first strike.

Nobody straps bombs on themselves and walks into daycares to make a political statement either.

This ain't Russia, China, or the U.S we're talking about here.

Gee, thank you IAEA.
Iran may be working on a nuclear warhead... no **** Sherlocks.

To be fair, I don't believe Iran has a history of using suicide bombers.

It's rhetoric meant to impress the hardcore fundamentalists in his country.

Men with power desire two things: keeping their power and increasing their power.

Building a nuke does both. Using a nuke would cost them everything.

Building one might as well.......;)

No nuclear armed country has ever been invaded. Generally because invading a nuclear armed country would provoke them to use those nukes.

But gain them what? Remember, before you answer, think like they do. Religiously.

Men in these positions aren't nearly as religious as they act. Like I said, it's rhetoric to please the fundies.

They have to know that just building a nuke will trigger an attack.

.... why would they suspect that? We've never done it before. Nobody has. North Korea being the most recent example. They built a nuke and nobody did anything.

You are saying Ahmadinejad has the power over the Mullahs?

The Israelis have. Osirak. And in Syria.

That's because they are next door to China & they have nothing anyone wants......;)

no way would an American citizen pilot his airplane into a federal office building in a suicidal display of political dissatisfaction

excellent point you have made
