Snow days mean less food for many students

Exactly. If I refuse to pay my taxes then guys with guns will come after me...

When it comes right down to it, if you break ANY law, whether it be towards the government, the private sector, or an individual, and do not take some sort of responsibility for it, eventually, guys with guns will be there for you. The "guys with guns" argument is actually pretty silly. In reality, what is really being said is that there are consequences for behaviors... which is true no matter what you do.

I'm not making an argument. I'm just pointing out to hazlnut that the government uses force or the threat of force to compel individuals to pay taxes. He seems to think that this is not the case...

What happens to people who don't pay their taxes?

1)Nothing.

2)They pay a penalty and work out payment plan with the IRS.

3)If they try to hide money and mislead authorities, they may be looking at some time.

4) They get appointed to a position by President Obama

(Come on, that one was too easy to pass up)

It kinda reminds me of the "if I do not have kids I should not have to pay for public schools" argument. It simply comes off as heartless to me.

Maybe, but forcing your own views of "kindness" or "charity" on other people is walking a dangerous road. Maybe you think it must go somewhere nice since it is paved with good intentions and all...

Because conservatives tend to be more dogmatic and will give more as It is their pass into the great blue sky:)

But for the record-there are plenty of Pagan Based org too. It is not like the right owns the right to help people and find those on the left do it for more of the right reasons.;)

Also for the record, some of us Pagans are conservative.

I know Dan is a good and cool dude though.

While they in fact may be cesspools of ineffectiveness, inefficiency, and incompetence, it can be argued that public schools do contribute to the general welfare because they are necessary to a thriving and growing economy from which all benefit. What business is going to locate in a town without schools?

But a social contract in which everybody contributes to a common school system open to all is a very different thing than requiring everybody to contribute to a private or parochial school system that picks and chooses what students will be accepted.

It is also different than requiring everybody to fund a program, however worthy, that subsidizes lunches for some students but not all.

Very True. I did not mean to imply nor suggest there are no Pagan conservatives. Sorry if I came off that way:3oops:

You see, when you say "exactly" you're claiming that I said the same thing you did I didn't.

As anyone reading this thread can see.

People evade taxes as part of bigger criminal endeavor do go to jail--do you think that's wrong?

Look, if you want to go live in the woods and make a living building furniture for people, go for it. I won't tell. But when you get old and can't build furniture anymore, just craw into a grave and cover yourself with dirt, because if you try to collect social security, you're stealing our money.

But if you want to drive around on public roads, get mail from the USPS, and use 100 other public services... Then shut-up and pay your way like the rest of us.

Do you have a learning disability or something? It seems like the simplest concepts escape you with some regularity. Let's start from the beginning, shall we?

1. SA said the government uses force and the threat of force to redistribute personal wealth.

2. You took issue with his use of the term "machine gun" as an illustration of this fact.

3. I showed you that the government uses force and the threat of force to redistribute personal wealth.

4. You went off on an irrelevant tangent in an attempt to create a strawman about the morality of tax evasion.

5.

Even if I wanted to draw on SS I couldn't, since all the money will have been plundered by you old useless people. Nice little ponzi scheme you got going there...

There's a big difference between Federal and State services. You should learn about it.

Oh, and I don't care about the USPS. The private sector can easily replace it.

Which ones, state or federal, public services are paid for with tax dollars?

A)State
B)Federal
C)Both

How many do you use day?

Did your alarm go off this morning? Electricity...

Where you robbed last night? Police...

Did you get water for your coffee? Water management...

I could on all day long. It's uneducated folks who don't get how much government really does for them...

By the way, did you drive on any roads that weren't dirt...

And if know a way that UPS or FEDEX can deliver a box for $4.80 (Priority Mail) you should apply for a job as their CEO...

I thought you might ignore the majority of my post and opt for a selective retort which contained nothing of worth...

You missed the point - no surprise there.

Name one thing the NEA or SS does for me. Go ahead, name one.

Did your alarm go off this morning? Electricity...

Where you robbed last night? Police...

Did you get water for your coffee? Water management...

All locally funded via Constitutionally permissible government agencies.

See the difference yet or are you going to opt for more fail?

I could on all day long. It's uneducated folks who don't get how much government really does for them...

I used to work for the government, so I know how much they do for us. Problem is, not every single government agency in existence actually benefits the general welfare, a fact you seem to struggle with.

And if know a way that UPS or FEDEX can deliver a box for $4.80 (Priority Mail) you should apply for a job as their CEO...

I'm sure they could if, like the USPS, they were able to indefinitely subsidize their loses with tax money. Are you one of those people that thinks the USPS uses magic to keep their costs lower than UPS or FEDEX? Magic's not real, you know...

USPS News Release: Postal Service Ends Third Quarter with $2.4 Billion Loss

P.S. - The USPS is an Enumerated Power in the US Constitution.

You do know there are poor people in this country right? People who have to chose between $5 of gas to drive to work and $5 to buy something to eat for their kids?

"Are there no prisons?", asked Scrooge.
"Plenty of prisons", said the gentleman, laying down the pen again.
"And the Union workhouses?", demanded Scrooge. "Are they still in operation?"
"They are. Still", returned the gentleman, "I wish I could say they were not."
"The Treadmill and the Poor Law are in full vigour, then?", said Scrooge.
"Both very busy, sir."
"Oh! I was afraid, from what you said at first, that something had occurred to stop them in their useful course", said Scrooge. "I'm very glad to hear it."

"-According to the Bread for the World Institute 3.5 percent of U.S. households experience hunger. Some people in these households frequently skip meals or eat too little, sometimes going without food for a whole day. 9.6 million people, including 3 million children, live in these homes.

-America's Second Harvest (Feeding America: Hunger-Relief Charity | FeedingAmerica.org), the nation's largest network of food banks, reports that 23.3 million people turned to the agencies they serve in 2001, an increase of over 2 million since 1997. Forty percent were from working families."

And how many of them skip out of choice? For example, I used to skip breakfast when I was a kid in jr and sr. high because I wanted the sleep more than the food. So I was hungry - I mooched an apple or candy bar off of a friend with an early lunch period or went out on an extended bathroom break to grab something from the cafe. I ate too little for 4 years...

Your link identifies that 3.5 % familys experience hunger. Why is that a bad thing again? Especially when we have an obesity issue in this country from toddler age to 19 years of age.

JAMA said:
Overall, in 2003-2006, 11.3% (95% confidence interval [CI], 9.7%-12.9%) of children and adolescents aged 2 through 19 years were at or above the 97th percentile of the 2000 BMI-for-age growth charts, 16.3% (95% CI, 14.5%-18.1%) were at or above the 95th percentile, and 31.9% (95% CI, 29.4%-34.4%) were at or above the 85th percentile. Prevalence estimates varied by age and by racial/ethnic group. Analyses of the trends in high BMI for age showed no statistically significant trend over the 4 time periods (1999-2000, 2001-2002, 2003-2004, and 2005-2006) for either boys or girls (P values between .07 and .41).

Anybody who goes hungry in Albuquerque NM or any other town or city of any size does so out of ignorance--they simply don't know where to go to get food--or by choice. There are literally dozens of food pantries, homeless shelters, soup kitchens, and churches and other charitable organizations who provide one or more or all, who turn nobody away, and who have food left over after meals.

By national standards, New Mexico is a 'poor state'.

Now there are numerous incidents where people given food then trade it or sell it in return for booze or drugs. So, if they are then hungry, is that a hunger problem? Or something else.
