Let's try this comparison on for size:
I'm in Harlem. I'm holding a sign that says, "I hate niggers". I get my ass kicked, or even get killed. It's not ok to kill me, but I have to take responsibility for putting myself in a position for something bad happening to me. Sometimes women who get raped, are guilty of the same thing.
Just to inject an alternative perspective here...
There was a rape case in my community where a very drunken woman left a bar with a stranger, went to his car, and was raped.
Do I blame her for being raped? No. The guy was a rapist, and is 100% culpable for his actions.
However, she's 100% responsible that it was her. Women who exercise poor judgement make it more likely that they will become a victim.
One thing that is really interesting about rape is that some women are victimized more often than others. Rape is not distributed evenly through the population.
Rape and Sexual Assault
Rapists are rapists, but women have varying risks of becoming a victim based upon their own actions. Leaving a bar, intoxicated, with a stranger...is definitely going to increase your odds of being a victim. Some high risk behaviors expose women to a considerable risk of rape. While 56%, or an estimated 6.8 million women experienced only one rape, 39% or an estimated 4.7 million, were raped more than once; and five percent were unsure as to how many times they were raped.
