Re: 3 Dead in Shooting at University of Alabama Campus

In all fairness, there have been a good many Repubs whose record on gun rights kinda sucked too, though as a matter of statistics you have more anti-gun Dems than Repubs.

I was gravely disappointed in Bush II, when he avowed that he would sign the sad joke misnamed the "Assault Weapons ban" back into law if Congress sent it to him... I was doubly POed that the Repub Senate passed a version of the AWB, but relieved and cheered that the Repub House refused to renew it.

Granted, there are surely a lot of left-wing Dem politicos who would love to see lots of highly restrictive new gun laws passed, BUT they do seem to have caught on to a political fact: gun control is no longer popular and it costs the Dems elections. Not to say they might not try to sneak something in if they think they can get away with it, but it doesn't seem to be front-burner priority anymore.

The majority of politicians, of whatever stripe, are more concerned with preserving their own power and position than they are about any ideological concern. Making this purely a left-right issue probably isn't accurate; for instance you have quite a number of people on DP who self-identify as liberal, but support the 2A and even have a carry permit.

Meanwhile, the OP is really, fundamentally, about a violent nut who finally blew up in a spectacular fashion... and **** like that happens, I don't know that it is really so much a political football as it is just a commentary on human nature.

Effective immediately DOD Surplus, LLC, will be implementing new requirements for mutilation of fired shell casings. The new DRMS requirement calls for DOD Surplus personnel to witness the mutilation of the property and sign the Certificate of Destruction. Mutilation of the property can be done at the DRMO, if permitted by the Government, or it may be mutilated at a site chosen by the buyer. Mutilation means that the property will be destroyed to the extent prevents its reuse or reconstruction. DOD Surplus personnel will determine when property has been sufficiently mutilated to meet the requirements of the Government.

That is one factor, yes, but the ammo shortage actually started several years ago, and several factors were causal:

    1. Issues on importing Russian and other mil-surplus ammo, including that Russia started selling a lot of surplus wpns/ammo to Mideastern "clients" instead of the US civilian market.
    2. Lots of ammo going to our troops in the mideast, and to allied forces in same AO.
    3. China buying up massive amounts of scrap metal and running the price of metals (casings) up.
    4. Panic-buying related to the 2008 election.

Actually there were a couple more too, related to me by a buddy who is in the biz, but I forget.

So yeah, there was an "Obama-factor" but that wasn't the sole cause.

By the way when people complained Obama under pressure allowed the brass to once again be recycled.

Really? I hadn't heard that; that's good. Ammo has been way too expensive for too long, and I tend to burn through the stuff by the case.

    Why?

Every year, thousands of eighteen year olds are trained with the most sophisticated weapons in the world and only rarely does an incident.

Are the men who enlist in the military somehow incredibly smarter than those who go to college? On the average, no.

I can guarantee that on practically every submarine now at sea in the United States Navy, there's an eighteen year old kid driving the thing. The men running that nuclear power plant are almost all younger than your average college senior.

So why assume your average college freshman is too dumb to absorb the training needed to handle a firearm correctly?

    He's not.

The average college kid gets the reputation for being a useless irresponsible lout because society expects that of him.

The military expects the men serving to be men, and so they act like men.

Maybe we need to stop rewarding and idolizing ignorance.

A gun's a damn tool. Almost anyone can use a wrench correctly, with minimal training, almost anyone can handle a gun correctly, with minimal training.

To say otherwise is to reveal the stain of elitism on your soul.

Probably has something to do with the spate of maniac shooters behaving like their the fox in the hen house.

People know that if the hens had guns the foxes wouldn't be able to kill so many.

Turtles claim was that this was the most antigun ticket in history. Thats not supported by the facts. Its just another attempt to paint whichever democrat runs each election as out of the mainstream. Its ridiculous.

The ammo shortage predates The Obama.
His election just made it worse - and rightly so.
