Guards stand by during brutal attack

I don't think that those types of security guards are appropriate for a public transit system. If people see security guards in this type of location, they expect assistance from them.

I agree.

The fact is most security guards you see in most areas are not allowed to touch you no matter what. They are there for pure determent and reporting and are only allowed to observe, report, and hope you don't leave before the cops arrive.

The expectations are under cover private/company security that have been licensed by the sheriff's office to legally detain individuals. I worked undercover security at Target, Macy's, and Nordstrom through my late teens early twenties. Fun gig.

Agree with that.....;)

Personally, I'd be ashamed of fearing getting my ass kicked by a 15 year old girl....:3oops:
Not to mention doing nothing after the attack....
This type of thing is getting more & more commonplace up here......:(

Don't forget the 8 male friends of the attacker who were also present. Are you prepared to get shot or get your ass kicked by a gang attack?

What's the point of having security guards, if they're not going to provide security for anybody? In Vancouver the public transit system has it's own full fledged police force. Employing so-called security guards and not having them protect anybody is unacceptable.

So does Metro Transit. They also have a police force. God knows what they use it for and why they have to hire security guards who have no police powers.

No one, not even a fire fighter or a police officer (though perhaps in the military?) has a legal obligation to put their life on the line to defend someone else. They do so voluntarily. Whether these guards felt that helping the girl was dangerous to their own welfare, or not encouraged by the policy of their employer, or failed to act for any other reason, it doesn't matter. They did nothing wrong in their inaction. Certainly I myself would have jumped in to stop it, and I am disappointed that neither the guards nor the other observers did anything. But I can't condemn the security guards any more than anyone else who saw it and did nothing.

See, it's this attitude right here that makes these kinds of situations more and more common. There was a time that real men used to feel that they had an obligation to their fellow men to intervene when someone was being abused. There was a time that people, teenagers and kids especially, knew that being seen taking part in this kind of barbarism by any adult would have resulted in swift intervention leading to punishment. The obligations we felt toward each other were not always inspired by legality, but rather human decency and the fact that being witness to this and not intervening would reflect poorly on you. Posts like this that excuse the inaction of these guards are just indicative of how sick and cancerous our society truly is and how that sickness is so pervasive and even excused.

So sad.

Hind sight is 20/20, but I know I would have acted because I am armed.....;)

The girl on the floor did not deserve to be protected?......
I'm embarassed for you.......:3oops:

Maybe, maybe not. I don't know enough about the situation to say for sure, either way.

Not in a jail, you're not.

just a couple of quick statements.

When I was in High School there were almost no fights with boys or girls and one of the reasons was a rumor that was circulated that there was a group of 7 Varsity football players and wrestlers that would break up any fights and any guy who hit his girl friend would pay an awful price. That group called itself the "Hit Squad" and the rumor was investigated after a bully got his ass kicked by one member for picking on weaker kids.

Was it a real group? Yes but there were only 5 members, and their full member identities was never widely revealed, and no one got in trouble because the Hit Squad were like brothers.

My second observation is that grown men who would stand by during what could be called attempted murder is reprehensible and these "Guards" are worthless.

They should be trained and armed, however the cost would be much higher because of the liability that comes from having armed guards.

I have also found that in places where concealed carry laws are in place like AZ. there are fewer physical altercations because you never know who is and isn't armed. It won't change kids problems but it might embolden adults to get involved more readily if they knew they would be safer if they did.

"Real men" have a Y-chromosome. There is no other definitive quality.

I am not against human decency, I am against specifically condemning the guards rather than blaming our entire society.

what the hell?

As in, "that ain't my job." They looked like three clock-punchers drawing a pension, not three officers in place to protect the public.

Want to know what kind of tea I drink too? Because that would be about as relevant.

Nope, just curious as to what perspective your first post came from.

When I was 20 something and didn't have a wife and kids, I was 10 feet tall and bullet proof. Now that I'm 41 and have 6 kids, a wife and ex-wife to think about, my perspective has changed dramatically.

If you have six kids, you better not have a $12 a hour security job, or you are part of the problem......;)

I don't, but that's neither here, nor there. If I was a single parent, with one kid, a $12 an hour security job would be enough and my perspective would still be the same.

That's just more evidence that the sickness in our society is pervasive. If you think that's the sum of being a man, you are part of the problem. There is not honor, dignity, or pride in our society anymore and that's just sick.

Oh yes...isn't that just a mealy mouthed way of saying it's ok to let a young girl be beaten down right in front of you?

And it's not ok. You can make all the excuses for it that you want but the bottom line is that these men were apathetic cowards just like many men in our society have become. And your excuse of it is part of the reason why men in our society have become weak.

Fair enough......:)
While I personally consider them cowards & worthless, ultimately it is their job that is worthless.....
The job should be terminated, & as a result, so should they......;)

I'm nearly 40, and while I don't have any children of my own, I help financially support my sister, her three kids, and my parents when they require it.

Not only would I feel ****ty about myself if I stood by and did nothing while someone else was hurt (given that I COULD do something about it), I know that they would also lose respect for me as the decent human being they know and love.

Not to mention the fact that none of what you speak of would even remotely cross my mind if I found myself in a situation where someone needed help. Nor HAS it crossed my mind in the past when I did find myself in situations where someone needed help and it involved a risk to myself to help them.

If it looked like there was no way I could help someone without grievous injury to myself, then I would agree with you. But just some risk of a possible injury? Pahlease. As Jallman said, it's people that think like you who enable thugs to do the things that those kids did.

So no, I don't buy the whole "I don't wanna get beat up by a 15 yr old girl because I have mouths to feed" copout. It's just a convenient excuse to act cowardly, IMO. I could never live with myself if I did such a thing.

Of course everyone has the right to make those decisions for themselves, as they should. But I also have the right to look on certain decisions with some amount of disgust.

IMO, the security people should have done more. On lookers should have done more by assisting the security people. If security did not act, then someone should have stepped up. This incident speaks more to the lack of good parents and lack or moral decency by the teenagers who decided to beat on the victim. It also speaks volumes of what some people have become, “it’s not my job, it’s not my fault”. If anyone is to be sued it should be the teenagers who did the beating and ran with the group.

It isn't something new and no there has never been a time like the one you described. I watched a video in social deviance and in the early 70s a women was randomly attacked in Philidelphia during the night by a stranger. She screamed and people heard her screaming. Some opened the windows to see what was going on and she was screaming for someone to help her.
They didn't, they would see what was going on then close the window and go back to watching tv or sleeping. Eventually she managed to escape and run into her building but she collasped because she had been bleeding so much. Sadly, her body left the door open so the attacker went in and a tenent opended the door and saw what was happening and he closed the door leaving her with death. The guy killed her by the apartment entrance, and no one did anything or call the cops until two hours later.

So sad, yes, but people are people.

Your sexism is part of the problem in our society. Females are capable of honor, dignity, and pride just as much as males. Those are not parts of being a man. I judge the female onlookers for not interceding as much as the males. If the guards are told not to interfere then they are the least culpable, they had a reason not to step in. I feel the observers should have done something, but I was not there to understand the whole situation.

You are talking about a single, anecdotal incident. Are you telling me that 20 years ago, kids would pull these stunts in front of clearly designated authority figures and not expect to have them intervene?
