What's the point of having security guards, if they're not going to provide security for anybody? In Vancouver the public transit system has it's own full fledged police force. Employing so-called security guards and not having them protect anybody is unacceptable.

I've actually hired these types of security guards before. They are to observe and report only. If they do get involved they can be sued personally and/or fired from their position. They are not under corporate protection against any lawsuits against them.

With that said I would have definitely jumped in and helped the girl. Not doing anything is just messed up.

I don't think that those types of security guards are appropriate for a public transit system. If people see security guards in this type of location, they expect assistance from them.

    I agree.

The fact is most security guards you see in most areas are not allowed to touch you no matter what. They are there for pure determent and reporting and are only allowed to observe, report, and hope you don't leave before the cops arrive.

The expectations are under cover private/company security that have been licensed by the sheriff's office to legally detain individuals. I worked undercover security at Target, Macy's, and Nordstrom through my late teens early twenties. Fun gig.

Not to mention doing nothing after the attack....
This type of thing is getting more & more commonplace up here......
Don't forget the 8 male friends of the attacker who were also present. Are you prepared to get shot or get your ass kicked by a gang attack?

So does Metro Transit. They also have a police force. God knows what they use it for and why they have to hire security guards who have no police powers.

See, it's this attitude right here that makes these kinds of situations more and more common. There was a time that real men used to feel that they had an obligation to their fellow men to intervene when someone was being abused. There was a time that people, teenagers and kids especially, knew that being seen taking part in this kind of barbarism by any adult would have resulted in swift intervention leading to punishment. The obligations we felt toward each other were not always inspired by legality, but rather human decency and the fact that being witness to this and not intervening would reflect poorly on you. Posts like this that excuse the inaction of these guards are just indicative of how sick and cancerous our society truly is and how that sickness is so pervasive and even excused.

    So sad.
