Well this is pretty interesting...

Outspoken gay activist called back to active Army duty

Lt. Dan Choi, an openly gay Iraq veteran who has been an outspoken opponent of the U.S. military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, has been called back to active duty, The Advocate reports.

Last year, an Army National Guard committee had recommended that Choi, a West Point graduate and Arabic translator, be discharged under the "don't ask" policy after he said on The Rachel Maddow Show that he is gay.

The West Point graduate has been in limbo ever since awaiting final action from the military.

The Advocate says that after he was called up this weekend, he joined his unit on active duty in Pennsylvania.

The move comes one week after the nation's two top Defense officials, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Admiral Mike Mullen, called for an end to the 16-year-old "don't ask, don't tell" policy.

This is good news. Our military needs the best people it can get regardless of their sexual orientation.
I am glad to hear that the military is acting in their best interest and in the interest of this Country rather than the interests of a vocal minority that want to advance their political agenda and use the military as their agent.

That's a riot!...:rofl

If this was not just a blip in the system, then I think someone is sending a message.

Its the truth. The radical right-wing has tried to keep the best people out of the military because of their fears that if gays are allowed in the military, people might be more accepting of them in other areas such as marriage.

If you care about this Country, you want the best people in the best positions.
The right-wing doesn't care about that, they only care about advancing their right-wing anti-gay social agenda and they are willing to sacrifice the security interests of this country to do it.

That's where you totally lose credibility.

I believe that the Liberals are only interested in pushing the Liberal agenda, winning votes and couldn't give a **** less what effect it will have on our military.

So far, we have the best fighting force in the history of the world. How have policies of the past hurt our national security? Gonna hav a hard time proving otherwise.

Yes....because of course, no one who is gay could POSSIBLY be good for the military

You people are too much. Thank God you are losing these battles.

If that's the case why did the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy originate with the Clinton adminstration?

Your words, not mine.

Not hard at all. Look at the list of all of the gay people who have been discharged under DADT and what they brought to the table:

"The military has discharged almost 800 mission-critical troops and at least 59 Arabic and nine Farsi linguists under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in the last five years." - servicemen's legal defense network.

If that's the case why did the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy originate with the Clinton adminstration?

Because Clinton was weak and agreed to the compromise. One of the dumbest things that Clinton ever did.

Actually I think the Spartans were the best fighting force in the world. They managed to hold off several million Persians with an allied force of under 10,000 for three days in the Battle of Thermopylae. And boy oh boy, did those Spartans ever have homosexuals in their military.

By contrast, Americans have historically used technology and large numbers to their advantage. Of course, I guess it depends on how you define "fighting force".

It was a compromise. Clinton wanted to do away with the policy banning gays altogether but Congress went to the Republicans, so it was the best he could do.

I'm glad that you concede that the problem did not originate with the right-winged establishment.

He already knew that, he just ignores it because it doesn't jive with his agenda.

You guys are still hitting up the right-wingers for being the cause of the discrimination policy. How do you explain the fact that there are gay right-winged conservatives?

If this was not just a blip in the system, then I think someone is sending a message.

You are absolutely right. This was no mistake. This guy was discharged under DADT, which means there would have been a flag under normal conditions when the re-call was enacted. Those who are discharged prior to ETS under alternative conditions are NOT normally recalled.

I think this is a statement that probably has its origins pretty high up the chain.

That's a 20th century reality only. The Revolutionary War, the Barbary Wars, the War of 1812, the Mexican War, the Civil War, all saw American warriors heavily outnumbered.

They all support gay rights. Both Log Cabin Republicans and GOProud support the end of "Don't ask, Don't tell" and gay marriage. So while they may differ from liberal gays in just about every other issue, they still agree on those issues.

That was because they violated the law.

Or, it was a campaign promise used for donations and votes and then when it came time to bat, Clinton backtracked to DADT, he knew it wouldn't cost him a single vote, he knew he'd never be referred to as a homophobe, most importantly, he knew he had thousands of apologists such as CT here who would make "best he could do" excuses for him.

Clinton didn't have the support. He said as much in his speech recently where he talked about why he signed DOMA. When you are a politician, if you want to get anything done, you have to go where the support is. He has nothing to gain now from telling people what his views on these issues are.

Because most of those Log Cabin Republicans are fiscal conservatives or paleo-conservatives, not social or religious conservatives. Just because a person is a conservative doesn't mean they agree with all other conservative philosophies.
