Veteran congressman's death adds to Barack Obama's woes• Democrats fear Republicans will win seat held since 1974

Ewen MacAskill in Washington The Guardian, Tuesday 9 February 2010

The Democratic party faces another election test after the death yesterday of John Murtha, a congressman dubbed by his colleagues the "king of pork".

Murtha, aged 77, had been in the House of Representatives since being elected to his Pennsylvania district in 1974.

The fear in the party is that Republicans will notch up another victory when a special election is held, probably May

Why are the democrats worried about it then? Do you have any idea how long Murtha has held this seat......

No it wouldn't. The GOP might gain one seat. One.

And even if they do what do you think will change? The people in Murtha's District have been re-electing him since 1975. He brings home the pork. Even if a Republican gets elected to replace him he'll have to bring home the pork or he won't keep his job long.

So what difference does it make? The GOP is packed full of big spenders just like the Dems.

In your knee jerk reaction to be a cheerleader for your Republican party...you once again failed to read your own link past the headline:

"]"Murtha's death will have a negligible impact on the arithmetic of the House, where the Democrats have an overwhelming majority, unlike in the Senate

I'm glad to see that you removed Murtha from your signature. Is this some sort of bucket list? People you want to see die before yourself?

Checking them off like a Christmas list?

I have a flash for you myleft wing friend........I am from Murtha's district, Altoona to be exact and the only reason he ever got reelected is because of the pork he brought to Western Pa. and that is history now......Most people held their nose when they voted for him........

Why are you arguing with me anyhow? Its the dems in congress who are afraid.............

***** The difference Is - he's gone. Any emotional hold he had on some is also probably gone. Under Term Limits he could have been gone when Reagan was still President.

Every seat counts my left wing friend and to win this one which has been the dems for 30 years is huge, comparable to the Kennedy seat in Mass. in relation to the time the left has held it..........

Actually it doesn't Navy. Not unless the numbers are close. Senate seats have always and will continue to matter a great deal more than congress seats.
I don't like the way our legislative power is proportioned....but that's the reality.
