Jack Murtha

HARRISBURG, Pa. — U.S. Rep. John Murtha, an influential critic of the Iraq War whose congressional career was shadowed by questions about his ethics, died Monday. He was 77.

The Pennsylvania Democrat had been suffering complications from gallbladder surgery. He died at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, Va., spokesman Matthew Mazonkey said.

In 1974 Murtha, then an officer in the Marine Reserves, became the first Vietnam War combat veteran elected to Congress. One of Congress' most hawkish Democrats, he wielded considerable clout for two decades as the ranking Democrat on the House subcommittee that oversees Pentagon spending.

Murtha may not have been a very good legislator, and he may even have been a crook, but he was a good soldier.

RIP.

I will salute any one who has served their country.

Semper Fi, Congressman.

After he refused to apologize for using political grandstanding and lies to smear the names of good honest Marines? **** him, goodbye and good riddance.

This is an R.I.P. thread. Please start your own thread if you want to trash talk the guy, but this is supposed to be a respectful thread.

RIP Congressman. May not have agreed with you on everything, but sad to see you go.

Classy words by his opponent in the last election, and would-have-been in the upcoming election:

"Regardless of your political position, you always knew Jack had an immense love and loyalty to his family and the residents of the 12th Congressional District," Russell said.

RIP, Mr. Murtha.

In the end he was less than always faithful to the Corps but never failed to support the party line, and was there to get millions of wasted pork dollars spent on an Airport the bears him name that no one ever uses.

His military service is the only thing he should be remembered for.

RIP Congressman Murtha! You were the first official to really get Americans questioning our occupation in Iraq that led to the public opposition to our continued occupation, and for that I thank you!

....hmmmmmmmm....

Like I said on the other thread. Must be a full moon. All the crazies are out tonight in full force. :rofl

R.I.P. Murtha. You served well (considering the fact that you were also a politician. But I suppose we can forgive you for that.)

:what he said:

Does he count as "any one"? See how easy that was?
Shows you learned the 'depends on what the meaning of is, is' lesson very well. Congtratulations. ;)

***** When you start a thread it can wander AND Murtha regardless of whatever early altruism he might have had degenerated in 35 years in Congress to become a walking stereotype as to what's wrong with the institution. He was out for himself . To preserve his Sorry Ass in that Seat until they carried him out . Well that day was yesterday.

***** He moved to the Left out of fear of a Liberal Democrat challenger and he figured his back slapping VFW/VVA/Amer.Legion act would get him by with enbough independents in his area to hang on indefinatly .

****** I guess he'll go into Arlington. Room will be found.

May he rest in peace.

I agree with everything that has been said on this thread.

No, "every one" has a very clear meaning. It does not allow for exceptions. This is not rocket science, it's pretty basic. The only people confused are those who choose to be because they don't want the answer to be what it is.

I know, I know, I am wandering from the topic, but this needs to be said.

It is well known that bhkad was very much against Murtha, and couldn't stand him. However, he was gracious enough to post a RIP thread for Murtha when he died. To me, this shows that bhkad has a whole world of class, contained inside of him. My respect for him just went up a couple of hundred notches.

Well done, bhkad.

Sorry for hijacking the thread, but this had to be said.

Just goes to show that even people who may not agree with policies, that when a death occurs some people can put that aside for a moment and show some respect.
