As if we didn't need another example of how childish the Chinese government it, here is a new low even for Beijing.

CALGARY — The Chinese government has removed the University of Calgary from its list of accredited institutions — a move school officials are concerned is connected to the Dalai Lama's visit last fall

A spokeswoman with the Chinese consulate in Calgary would not respond to questions about why the government removed the university's name, saying only cryptically that the U of C "should know."

They are looking after their own interests. Did you expect something different from them?

No, but you're not exactly going to accomplish much by removing UofC from your lists. Ohhh, they're not accredited in China anymore, oohhh, they're mildly inconvenienced.

Think beyond this move. It is interesting that they did this before Obama meets with the Dalai Lama. Seems to be a message to America.

Yeah, probably. Even though it's a Canadian university, close enough I guess.

The Chinese government is just acting like an immature child...

May I assume this means no chinese students at this particular university? Our local university here is inundated with chinese students. It's my understanding they pay very well.

Considering the financial state we're in I'm guessing members of this administration is listening closely.

Hm, that might be the case. I don't actually know how much Chinese gov't accreditation matters in China. I suppose it would if you wanted to get a job with the Chinese government, but outside of that?

International students at Canadian universities typically pay about 3 times what domestic students pay.

It is a warning to other universities that have large chinese student populations.

The warning is

Honour the Dali Lama and lose out on the big fat titution fees of Mainland chinese student

The U of C has about 600 Mainland Chinese students, universities in BC most likely have plenty more.

Do you want to bet the U of Victoria will not be giving the Dali Lama a honourary degree any time soon

Accredidation in China probabe means the same as it does in Canada, meaning the degree is worthless if you want any sort of profession that has an association.

Ie engineers, accountants, doctors. Business Admin probably does not matter

Fair point, I concede that this is probably more important to the UofC than I had originally thought.

More of a concern to the current chinese student at the U of C

Overall I expect the U of C will offer an apology, and China will restore accreditation to the UofC.

The next university that gives the Dali Lama an honour will not be as lucky

It's time to isolate China's bitch ass. A strong message needs to be sent to those idiots in China's government.

Stop your bull**** or face isolation.

As a result of this action, all Chinese exchange stundents need to be ejected from the country. All Chinese schools need to lose accredation and the chinese need to be completely isolated.

A strong response to this idiocy is a must.

The Tory gov't up here tried that tactic, it didn't work at all. Now they're backtracking as fast as possible and trying to patch up the relationship that they messed up because they were idiots.

Uh oh, no more chinese students.

Unfortunately, it is a major inconvenience for Chinese students currently studying there or have degrees from that university should the government decide to de-recognize their degrees. This will have the effect of almost entirely stopping new enrollment at the university of Chinese students -- at least of those who intend to return to China following graduation.

Please explain in what sense it didn't work. Canada has long been a friend of the PRC -- from not allowing Taiwan to participate in the 1976 Olympics to not permitting Taiwanese planes with logos relating to a recent Taiwan tourism promotion campaign to land on Canadian soil.
