On the eve of the fullest moon of the year, NASA scientists were told they won't be able to visit any longer. In his new budget, President Obama plans to eliminate the space program's manned moon missions.

When the president releases his budget on Monday, a White House official confirmed on Thursday, there will be a big hole where funding for NASA's Constellation program used to be. Constellation is the umbrella program that includes the Ares rocket -- the replacement for the aging space shuttles.

NASA will receive an additional $5.9 billion over five years, some of which will be used to extend the life of the International Space Station to 2020. The official said it also will be used to entice companies to build private spacecraft to ferry astronauts to the space station after the space shuttle retires.

So what is Nasa's mission now?

In the meantime, the White House will direct NASA to concentrate on Earth-science projects — principally, researching and monitoring climate change — and on a new technology research and development program that will one day make human exploration of asteroids and the inner solar system possible.

    ... JFK he is not.

Yes, for anything right now. We don't have the technology to really attempt any manned space flights and to get that technology would require massive amounts of money (we're talking going beyond the moon). In the meantime, private industry can take over. Make something that can reliably and reach space and is easily reusable. Space tourism would probably be the first thing which could be realized, maybe a space casino next or something. Eventually when the world is capable of pooling its resources in which we can think about what to do for further space exploration, we can start considering it more seriously.

But honestly, I think this highlights one of the problems with NASA; it's under the direct control of the President. So we waste a bunch of money. Bush wanted to go to Mars, they had to research how to get there. Now Obama wants global warming, so they have to research it. It should be made more independent and allow the scientists to propose research plans.

You know the time is right to take control, we gotta take offense against the status quo

We have NOAA to worry about the Earth, Nasa is for the STARS.

When big O spends so much time rearranging and reorganzing govt he wonders why people think he's not accomplishing anything.
Sen. Clare McCaskill (D-MO) said on Wednesday that Joe Biden "has a tendency to talk forever and sometimes say things that are kind of stupid." She seemed to regret her own words, saying, "I was probably having a Joe Biden moment myself."

Nice. By ending Constellation, he's depriving us of any ability to send people into space at all after the Shuttle is retired this year. So, only Russia and China will be truly spacefaring nations.

And it's great timing, announcing this in the anniversary week of the three most tragic NASA accidents.

NASA is now going to research and monitor a hoax?

No one has ever said Barry didn't have an eye for nuance.

I think this is a sensible move given the circumstances. The US has more important things to worry about right now than space programs. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for space research and everything, but its a luxury for when you have lots of money, not when you're trying to reign in spending!

The problem is, it won't reign in spending.... Barry is just shifting the NASA budget over to the Global Warming hoax.
