Obama to End NASA Constellation Program

On the eve of the fullest moon of the year, NASA scientists were told they won't be able to visit any longer. In his new budget, President Obama plans to eliminate the space program's manned moon missions.

When the president releases his budget on Monday, a White House official confirmed on Thursday, there will be a big hole where funding for NASA's Constellation program used to be. Constellation is the umbrella program that includes the Ares rocket -- the replacement for the aging space shuttles.

NASA will receive an additional $5.9 billion over five years, some of which will be used to extend the life of the International Space Station to 2020. The official said it also will be used to entice companies to build private spacecraft to ferry astronauts to the space station after the space shuttle retires.

So what is Nasa's mission now?

In the meantime, the White House will direct NASA to concentrate on Earth-science projects — principally, researching and monitoring climate change — and on a new technology research and development program that will one day make human exploration of asteroids and the inner solar system possible.

... JFK he is not.

you guys need to make up your minds. why can't private industry take over?

:rofl

Yes, for anything right now. We don't have the technology to really attempt any manned space flights and to get that technology would require massive amounts of money (we're talking going beyond the moon). In the meantime, private industry can take over. Make something that can reliably and reach space and is easily reusable. Space tourism would probably be the first thing which could be realized, maybe a space casino next or something. Eventually when the world is capable of pooling its resources in which we can think about what to do for further space exploration, we can start considering it more seriously.

But honestly, I think this highlights one of the problems with NASA; it's under the direct control of the President. So we waste a bunch of money. Bush wanted to go to Mars, they had to research how to get there. Now Obama wants global warming, so they have to research it. It should be made more independent and allow the scientists to propose research plans.

When big O spends so much time rearranging and reorganzing govt he wonders why people think he's not accomplishing anything.

Nice. By ending Constellation, he's depriving us of any ability to send people into space at all after the Shuttle is retired this year. So, only Russia and China will be truly spacefaring nations.

And it's great timing, announcing this in the anniversary week of the three most tragic NASA accidents.

NASA is now going to research and monitor a hoax?

No one has ever said Barry didn't have an eye for nuance.

I think this is a sensible move given the circumstances. The US has more important things to worry about right now than space programs. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for space research and everything, but its a luxury for when you have lots of money, not when you're trying to reign in spending!

The problem is, it won't reign in spending.... Barry is just shifting the NASA budget over to the Global Warming hoax.

If I remember right several private companies are going to start operating spacecraft that the government will use to get into space.

Whatever, Obama can't win with you people anyways, so you might as well be ignored. :)

Sure he can win.... all he has to do is knock off that crazy liberal agenda of his and do what is right by his country..... very simple.

"What is right" is debatable, that's why America isn't a one-party state.

You're a Canadian and don't have a dog in this fight, so you might as well be ignored. :)

No not really, suggesting that Obama ignore people who would criticize him whatever he did (given that he's a Democrat), isn't the same as supporting a one party state. Nice try though.

You're seeing what you want to see, not a big surprise really.
A Canadian supporting a liberal US president, not a big surprise really.

And confused about his positions.... also not that surprising.

Well, so are you, actually. Crunch said what Obama could do to gain his support, and you dimissed it, preferring instead to believe that there is indeed nothing.

What I said was:

Crunch essentially wants Obama to become yet another conservative. While Crunch is entitled to his opinion, there's no point in Obama trying to pander to people like him because chances are there isn't enough Obama could do to make them vote for him. He's tarred and feathered as a "liberal Democrat" in the eyes of the American right.
