    Velcro.

    Freeze Dried Ice Cream.

And here is a big compiled list that will boggle the minds of those ignorant of what Space Exploration has given Man.

A lot of things are "common knowledge" which also happen to be wrong.

It might not have been military spending per se, but it was the cost of the war. The US government was posting surpluses in the Clinton era, I believe.
On paper, but the debt still grew even the years where a "surplus" was posted.

It's not like Bush expanded social programs or anything.

You really need to go take a look at that again.

I admit that Obama is making the debt worse, but Bush dug the initial hole.
Bush dug a hole (and one which was shallowing out every year until this recession). Obama is using a steam shovel.

Look, I pointed it out in another thread -- you can take the entire cost of both the Iraq and Afghanistan operations -- total, from 2001 until today -- and take it away from Obama's deficit, and STILL have a deficit on par with Bush's highest.

The 18 billion NASA uses is pocket change.

Not that it even matters here, because Obama is not cutting NASA's budget. He's increasing it.

I put those two for smiles, nothing more.

    How about GPS?

    Or SatCom's?

Well, in his defense, there's no link.

*shrug*Yeah, but I don't see any prominent American politicians out there with the courage for meaningful fiscal conservatism. Nobody wants to raise taxes, or make drastic cuts, they're too afraid.

NASA's budget wasn't cut, it was increased and redirected. The climate change bit is only one part. Earth sciences cover a huge amount of territory, and that won't curb NASA's abilities. There are plenty of terrestrial challenges to be overcome. We've only explored something like 10% of our oceans, for example, and conditions in the deep ocean are comparable to the needs of outer space, so technology development can still progress with new inventions. Frankly, I would rather see us continue to explore our own world before we become gung ho about outer space.

The fact is, we're in a recession, and putting someone on the moon again is not realistic right now. It would just be another stunt to boost nationalism. The reality of convenient and efficient space flight is within a century away, if not more.

Let the open market take up the challenge. Companies have a status quo and they will make the most versatile models for space flight. The government is just going to keep squandering money on research programs based on the whims of individual administrations. Letting the private sector takeover will give it more focus.

Canada is the leader in space robotics. The international space station wouldn't exist without its contributions. So yeah, Canada's say is relevant in our cooperative efforts.

Right, but a manned Moon mission would probably have been a lot more expensive than NASAs current budget.
