White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terror trial

The White House ordered the Justice Department to consider other places to try the 9/11 terror suspects after a wave of opposition to holding the trial in lower Manhattan.

The White House took the action hours after Mayor Bloomberg called Attorney General Eric Holder to say he would "prefer that they did it elsewhere."

"It would be an inconvenience at the least, and probably that's too mild a word for people that live in the neighborhood and businesses in the neighborhood," Bloomberg told reporters.

"There are places that would be less expensive for the taxpayers and less disruptive for New York City."

One fiery phone call and Obama folds? What's up there, did he and his henchmen finaaly figure out it was a dumb move from the start?

Too bad Mayor Bloomberg didn't suggest just sentencing Khalid Sheikh Mohammed since he's already confessed. Now that would save some money time and trouble.

What in God's name? An inconvenience......Mayor?

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

Obama has painted himself into a corner.

So what lucky city gets to host the terrorist trials?

This whole thing has exposed without a doubt Obama's view on the war on terror.

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

Bloomberg probably told him to get lost.

Bloomberg probably told him to get lost.

And why I agree with Erod. We have the military, the voters, many Republican leaders....all telling him this is a catastophic mistake....and he changes his mind cause the NYC Mayor says it's gonna be an inconvenience.

Our President is a circus clown, Gentlemen.

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

I know three cities that would be perfect for the trial - Boston, San Francisco, or Seattle ;)

How about Abu Ghraib? I hear Lynndie England is available.

I agree with that. There's nothing wrong with bringing terrorists to justice. There's nothing wrong with being practical about it either.

Practicality would indicate that we should have tried him in a military tribunal, in Guantanamo Bay. Everything to conduct the tribunal is already in place. The logistical problem is already solved and we wouldn't be having this political clap-trap.

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

wow, another huge setback delivered to our dumb doofus by his own party in power

right up there with gitmo, his debt commission, cap and trade, health care...

makes one wonder if his capital gains, his nukes, his offshore oil drilling (LOL!) will experience any more shelf life than this movement of ksm to manhattan

the presidency of empty pronouncements, whispy trial balloons

state of the union comprehensive is coming to be seen as the classic case

completely inept politics---the administration suffers all the political PAIN of this mindless maneuver, all for no GAIN

the president's SURRENDER on this issue invokes the momentous memory of holder's astonishingly amateur testimony before lindsey graham when the addled AG couldn't even answer the undergraduate, pre-law question of PRECEDENT

holder's hurry-hurry to hustle up miranda rights for mutallab is another major component of this political picture of incompetence and loss

difi declared yesterday, probably the determiner

bayh and lincoln wrote mr holder a letter requesting answers---LOL!

we've already seen what that approach yields

maybe the AG should ask alito

the whole thing has exposed without a doubt doofus' view of our war on terror

no wonder massachusetts mauled him

Too bad, but the righties had ample opportunity to try these guys while they still controlled the White House. But no, they were more interested in torture and indefinite detention.

They had their chance, but blew it.

We left it so Barry would have one more thing to stumble and fall over.

You're welcome. :2wave:

Or......perhaps they stopped numerous terrorist attempts in the process. You and I will never know.

Trying them in Manhattan next to their "work" might be the dumbest governmental decision in known history. Makes you wonder where their true allegiances lie, because no mildly educated adult could blunder this so badly.

Every day, a click to the right occurs concerning Gitmo.

The issues are obvious 1) Security 2) Cost 3) Facilitation and Transportation 4) Communication, meaning every level of government...Federal, State, and Local must coordinate. Every level of government has it's own security, cost, communication, and facilitation concerns. The endeavor becomes colossal and overwhelming, the good Mayor of New York realizing that the day the decision was made no doubt.

May I ask a question, Barack?

Which one of the concerns above doesn't Gitmo provide the perfect solution?

Every day...more and more will come to realize what a stroke of genius Gitmo truly is.

I agree on military tribunals. My only stipulation would be that they are open for public review. And not just for Americans, but for the world. I don't mean cameras inside or anything like that. But that all transcripts are available and that media outlets from around have some access to the proceedings before, during, and after.

Just heard on the news that one of the new options they are now looking at is a military tribunal at Gitmo.

KSM and company should take up residence with Obama.

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

Thank god. My office is about 3/4 mile from the courthouse, and the train I take goes right past it, so I was really, really, really not looking forward to dealing with this bull****.

Send his ass to Governor's Island at a minimum, or even better, someplace out of the metro area.

Who cares! I don't care where they get tried, just as long as there's a trial.

That's right, give him a fair trail before shooting him.

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

Who cares!

1) Security cares
2) Cost cares
3) Facilitation and transportation care
4) Communication cares
5) Local authorities care
6) Anti-terrorism cares
7) I care
8) The Courthouse cares
9) scope of rights afforded cares

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

When a guilty plea is entered there is no need for a trial.

Put all of those who are guilty by their own words in a special prison dug into the ground with no windows in the muddle of the desert so they can feel at home. Put two 10' chain link fences around it lined with concertina wire two guard towers with M-60 machine guns in each with instructions that if something moves above ground you kill ill it.

The prisoners get no TV no radio except KFMB and Rick Roberts followed by Glenn Beck, Hannity, then KOGO and Roger Hedgcock, and then take your pick. The only thing they allowed to do is other than that is use the phone once a day to call Obama for help, and every Dec. they are forced to watch old ABC Christmas special movies and the Pope's address to his flock.

I would also include a tape of me addressing the fact that Islam is not a religion but a lame assed cult for losers.

Report: Obama administration backs off plan to hold terror trial in New York

First mentioned a week ago: http://www.debatepolitics.com/war-terror/63051-consequences-pretending-war-criminal-matter-25.html#post1058505948. Now it looks all but confirmed.

Report: Obama administration backs off plan to hold terror trial in New York

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has abandoned its plan to put Khalid Sheik Mohammed, who claims to be the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks, on trial in Lower Manhattan, according to administration officials.

"New York is out," said an administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity because the decision hasn't been officially announced. "We're considering other options."

who cares?

he just told you, rightinnyc cares

he explained very clearly that a ksm trial downtown will turn his and his neighbors' lives upside down

and you thoughtfully come back with, "who cares"

very revealing

Re: White House orders Justice Department to look for other places to hold 9/11 terro

Didn't the Jan 22 deadline for Gitmo just get..."backed" off?

Now scuttlebutt that Virginia and DC being considered.

And I see Bloomberg being interviewed, Holder apparently coming to NY and asking if they could do it, if NY could handle the security.

Note, promise to close prison first....look for solutions later.

And every solution already in place. At Gitmo.
