US to deploy 10,000 troops in Haiti

The US government has promised $100,000,000 in aid. It is being reported that US private donations are on track to surpass the $2 billion given after the Asian tsunami.

How much have other governments and peoples given?

Yea right. Why isn't anyone looking to China to sort this mess out?

They "like" us, so what? Who gives a crap?

They do that anyway, hence my bitterness.

Because we are Americans, and this is what Americans do.

I definitely think we should help them as much as we are able, regardless if they remember or not. I just wish our government would do it for the right reasons. I'm sick of trying to impress some elitist cabal of European cunts.

That's a pretty cynical way of looking at it, especially given that the right wing slammed Obama for not giving a speech about the earthquake until just one day after the fact. Now the troop deployment is being seen as catering to Europeans?

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

It couldn't be that the U.S. takes personal responsibility for Haiti's development following the 1934 occupation, could it? The relationship goes way back.

Because we are Americans, and this is what Americans do.

And what has it gotten us? What does the United States have to show for its good will and sacrifice?

Global resentment. Perpetual criticism. Scores of dead Americans. Insurmountable debt.

The Lord's appreciation, for starters.

You do it because its the right thing to do.Do you only ever do anything good because you feel you will get recognition?

I wouldn't have it any other way.

Do you think I'm a right-winger?

Now the troop deployment is being seen as catering to Europeans?

Now? I think it's always been like that, to some degree. I'm not trying to bash Obama, if that's what you're implying.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Looks like Obama and the United States have something in common.

It certainly does go way back. Look at how much money we've already poured into Haiti. Has it helped them?

Haitians thinking said:
Uhh...

We didn't get help yet...

Must show our disapproval by hindering help from getting to us...

What?

I was watching ABC news, and they were talking about how supplies were sitting on an airstrip, waiting for the haiti government, UN, some other world food agency, and US military to coordinate drop off points for the water and other supplies.

I'm sorry, but if I am a military commander put in charge of the operation, I would say **** my commision and just set the **** up myself and get the supplies to the people. If we are on the scene, we don't need to wait for permission from some bueracrats to save ****ing lives. When I saw the US army general talking about how they had to wait, I wanted to strangle the ****er myself. Get your **** together and do something now. A good plan today is better than a perfect plan tomorrow.

You're never been in the military right? One of the basic premises of the military is to follow orders. If you do your own thing you suffer severe consequences. It's just the way it is.

Perhaps it's because these people are used to having their corrupt government let them down? So they are used to taking drastic measured to be heard? Not excusing it but it may be a reason.

Sounds like a Hollywood movie.

I don't want recognition. I want my country to survive.

well it is the right thing to do and it isnt gonna kill america to help.

That remains to be seen. See Somalia.

Whats your point on somalia i dont see how anything happened there that finacially crippled america.

Nineteen American soldiers died handing out food in Somalia. That's 19 too many.

How presumptuous. Following orders is part of the military, indeed, but that doesn't mean all orders are to be followed, or that they should be followed.

Wouldnt you say they where doing something both courageous and good?

1000s have died in Haiti people with as much family and experiences and dreams that you have.Today on the news i saw a young woman who had two broken legs and lost all her family except her baby and she was lay down in the street. To want to help such a person is human.Would owning an American passport make her more real?

The U.S. usually deploys troops in other countries during disasters. Why is this it so different this time?

It's not.

It is something the American government always does.

Exactly. If, for some reason, we decided not to do anything the world would throw a fit. Why doesn't anyone throw a fit when China sits on their asses? Or Russia? Or Europe? Or any other country?

All this bull**** about it doing it to get recognition is ridiculous.

Who said anything about recognition? I assure you, the last thing on my mind is what other countries think of us.

Sure. But why would you block access, you know? Do something, anything, but don't make it even harder for that which you are asking for to happen. It's just bizarre.

Does it make sense to you that if you're tired of getting no help you barricade yourself in so that help can't get to you when it finally does arrive?
"Angry Haitians set up roadblocks with corpses in Port-au-Prince to protest at the delay in emergency aid reaching them. . .

They are starting to block the roads with bodies, it's getting ugly out there, people are fed up with getting no help," he told Reuters.
To protest the delay you do things that only ensure a further delay???

Everyone in the US military, past and present, swore to protect this country with their lives. They did not sign up to feed Somalians or Hatians. They did not sign up to die for whatever sob story happens to be on the nightly news that day. For even one drop of blood to be shed in "meals on wheels" missions is an insult to everyone who has ever worn the uniform of our country, and it should be a crime for politicians to risk the lives of servicemembers on such duties.

You want to send someone? Send the Red Cross or the Peace Corps.

Well than its obvious you think owning a certain passport makes your life more valuable.I think you should work on your empathy issues.
