About two years ago I was on a Caribbean cruise that took in the resort of Labadee, a part of the Island that is leased from the Haitians by the American Cruise boat industry.
This resort is surrounded by a "Berlin" style wall. We tried to visit the real Haiti but were stopped by rather sinister men with dark glasses and guns.
Sanitized Haitians were let in to provide entertainment, work in gift shops and serve at the buffet ect.
The stench of hypocrisy was to much for us, we left on the next tender.
The worst comment I heard that night on the ship, was how passengers had used food from the buffet to buy artifacts from the locals. Some were proudly showing off their souvenirs.
The cruise ships have visited the Island right through this disaster, they have taken additional supplies to give as aid.
I wonder how many of the Pax, as they fill there stomachs at the buffet think about what is going on on the other side of the wall.
Some of the aid that the Cruise industry has provided is old crew uniforms, old broken furniture ect, it costs less to dump this in Hiati than to dispose of it in Miami.
