Re: US to deploy 10,000 troops in Haiti

About two years ago I was on a Caribbean cruise that took in the resort of Labadee, a part of the Island that is leased from the Haitians by the American Cruise boat industry.

This resort is surrounded by a "Berlin" style wall. We tried to visit the real Haiti but were stopped by rather sinister men with dark glasses and guns.

Sanitized Haitians were let in to provide entertainment, work in gift shops and serve at the buffet ect.

The stench of hypocrisy was to much for us, we left on the next tender.

The worst comment I heard that night on the ship, was how passengers had used food from the buffet to buy artifacts from the locals. Some were proudly showing off their souvenirs.

The cruise ships have visited the Island right through this disaster, they have taken additional supplies to give as aid.

I wonder how many of the Pax, as they fill there stomachs at the buffet think about what is going on on the other side of the wall.

Some of the aid that the Cruise industry has provided is old crew uniforms, old broken furniture ect, it costs less to dump this in Hiati than to dispose of it in Miami.

To be particular, Switzerland banned minarets and France is in with the burqas. Yet neither of those countries have abstained from offering aid, neither has Britian.
    The Brits have provided aid.

Queues the song for Team America: World Police. What ever happened to Green Peace and taking free volunteers?

You mean obama decided to deploy troops in less than 7 months?

I dont think Green Peace would stand much of a chance against gangs of looters wielding machetes.

America reminds me of the decline of the Roman Empire. Ie, Nero fiddling while Rome burned. We are in some deep poo but I am sure not too many football fans will miss the play off, while stuffing their fat asses with doritos this week.

Why does it matter if the rest of the world forgets our good will? We do good will because we find responsibility in helping rebuild places that are destroyed by natural disasters, as the international community helped during Katrina.

The Haitian people who are helped by the US men and women will not forget. They are going to sift through the destruction and then rebuild their capital city. The only way for us to understand the symbolism of what occurred, with Port-au-Prince being struck, is to imagine Washington, D.C. in a similar circumstance.

The Charity of the United States, thru NGOS, citizens, and troops, is unprecedented. To be honest, I was not keeping up with the news this week and this disaster totally slipped by without me hearing about it until I heard a call that a local NGO already left for Haiti. There's no delay, ever.

Oh, so we're doing "the right thing"? How's Darfur doing, by the way?

If I may chime in. Personally I don't think we should be investing money in Haiti. We have more needs at home in the states. Money going to Haiti could be used going toward domestic Oil & Gas drilling on land that pumps money in the local markets where it happens. Also we have new military weapons systems that need funded as well as spare parts for the soldiers weapons in Iraq and Afghanistan. Money going toward Haiti could be used for Full Body Screener Machines in the Airports. This time let the other U.N. or other countries participate this time. We have obligations far greater than Haiti or its people. The War on Terror and killing the enemy is priority one.
