Oliver Stone: Hitler an easy scapegoat

Have you seen Platoon, Wall Street, Salvador, Heaven and Earth? Born on the Fourth of July?
Platoon and Salvador were masterpieces.
Which movies of his have you seen?
World Trade Center was pretty good too.

Platoon yes, hated it. Hollywood Vietnam, /yawn. Compared to say Full Metal Jacket, it was nothing.

Wall Street yes. It was ok, nothing great.

Salvador no.

Heaven and Earth no.

Born on the Fourth of July, yes, and hated it.

How about "World Trade Center"?

I thought Platoon was a great movie with great acting and according to my Vietnam vet brother it was about as accurate as it could be.

No, but I avoid things about 9/11 as much as I can. Too much emotion tied up in the event for me.

You would probaly like it. It is non-political and just tells the story of some survivors.

It's a problem when people attack people by saying "Nazi" or "Hitler", when they have little or no views also attributed to Hitler.

(I find it hard to believe both Obama and Bush are Nazis!)

Neither one really resembles Hitler. I agree, the Hitler label is thrown our far too often. It gets old.

I think what Stone meant was that Hitler is always shown to be a cartoonish villain in American movies. Or simply a figure we should all fear just because of the mere mention of his name. He is made to look like he controlled all Germans everywhere. In reality the leaders of the Nazi war machine were more of an incredibly complex group of people and Hitler's power over them is more fiction than fact.

Let's review what is at the center of the controversy.
#1.
Hitler is an easy scapegoat
.......... This statement is true because he is the perfect example of what is wrong when people listen to a charismatic speaker and fall for his lies and double speak.

#2.
throughout history and it’s been used cheaply
................Very true and it somehow diminishes from his despicable acts if we over use his example.

#3.
He’s the product of a series of actions
.....................This is a simple truism, because evryone who ever lived is a product of everything in there life that ever happened to them.

#4.
Cause and effect.
.................Double duh

“Hitler is an easy scapegoat throughout history and it’s been used cheaply. He’s the product of a series of actions. It’s cause and effect,”

Now let's compare what Hitler said with what we see going on today.

Hate is more lasting than dislike.
What group today is running around all year claiming that peaceful protesters were haters?

He alone, who owns the youth, gains the future.
Who is at the center of indoctrination of children like no one else in our Nations History?

How fortunate for governments that the people they administer don't think.
Who has followers that at as if he the Messiah and can't think for themselves.
If you tell a big enough lie and tell it frequently enough, it will be believed.
Who do you know that has been caught in 158 confirmed lies, and along with Hugo Chavez is following Hitlers foot steps?
Obama?s Documented Lies: 158 and remarkably still growing

I could go on all night but you get the point.

In this case we not making Hitler the scapegoat, nor using him cheaply.

I do have to say that as BAD AS HITLER WAS, STALIN IS EVERY BIT AS BAD, MAO, WAS WORSE in some ways, AND YET HITLER GETS ALL THE CREDIT FOR EVIL. Not fair I say and in that case he has been elevated to a slightly higher level than he should. But screw it evil is evil.

Impressive, you Godwined a thread already about Hitler. That is rare talent.

Seriously,he cannot personally beleive this can he? All I can hope for is that he trying to hype his latest project and willing to take heat to promote it.Has to be the least intelligent thing Ive seen offered up for public consumption since Obama told us middle class wouldnt have to have their taxes raised.
Yeah, but Stalin did kill nearly twice as many innocents as Hitler did. He also target specific minorities for execution, but we don't give his crimes nearly as much attention as we do Hitler's.

For that matter, Imperial Japan committed genocide and Nazi-esque experiments against Chinese civilians during WWII (Unit 731) but we hear much less about that as well.

Im not sure theres any 'context' (to use Stones words) that can mitigate the actions Hitler undertook during this period of time.

Hitler was genius, charismatic,a true leader, pathologically diabolical and clearly insane.Certainly multidimensional but I have a sneaking suspicion that he's going to try and play some kind of intellectually dishonest sympathy card.

He was a monster-cartoonish or otherwise.

This is a perfect example of why this movie could be interesting, as well as why the movie will be widely condemned.

Hitler was human just like you or I, and consciously made the decisions that he did. Calling him diabolically insane or pure evil lets him off easily and avoids addressing what actually happened.

The problem is that many people don't want to hear that - it's easier to just imagine Hitler as an inhuman spawn of Satan. That's what Stone meant when he called him a scapegoat. The movie is not likely to be a pro-Hitler polemic, but rather a more nuanced view that still makes clear how horrible he was.

The most interesting book I have ever read about Hitler was titled "Psychiatrists, The Men Behind Hitler".

There is even a story about Cleveland, Ohio in it in case you are a buckeye and have an inquiring mind.

The book is extremely well documented with Nazi archive documents.

"t was Hitler who did it, or so we have always thought. That ugly disgraceful period of history we call the Holocaust was all because of Hitler, a madman fixated on the insane notion of purifying the race by murdering everyone he considered impure.

We consider Hitler and the Holocaust part of the same package, and think we are free of it because Hitler is gone. Hitler was a madman, whose brutal policies, we assume, originated from his own demented soul. Consider the idea that he and the rest of German society had to be convinced. Then consider the blackness of soul of those who spent years in the calculated, systematic process of convincing them.

In Psychiatrists: The Men Behind Hitler, authors Thomas Roeder, Volker Kubillus and Anthony Burwell show us conclusively that it did not start with Hitler and we cannot afford the complacency of thinking it ended with him. The madness of the Holocaust started long before Hitler came to power, before he even reached maturity.

The first part of this three-part volume focuses on showing where the Nazi ideology originated. The authors have produced an enormous catalog of names and incriminating events. One can almost become lost in the sheer volume of material, but in the end the picture is more than clear, and we find that the psychiatrists are most damned by their own words."

Stone was also quoted as saying;

“Obviously, Rush Limbaugh is not going to like this history and, as usual, we’re going to get those kind of ignorant attacks.”

no one ever likes revisionist of history.

mtm1963[

LOL, yeah, I caught that too.

What exactly does Rush Limbaugh have to do with a movie about Hitler? Perhaps Oliver has some anger issues?....lol.

Stone is not incorrect in his statement. Hitler is VERY overused because he decided upon a course of action that most of the world does not agree with. If you look, however, in the history books of two very different nations there will be many people that the majority of the country considers a horrible person much like or exceding Hitler. Hitler is only used due to the fact that he is recognized by the entire world for what he did. Hitler was a visionary. Granted, his vision was not only impossible but also considered totally wrong by most cultures. But this does not change the fact that he is one of the greatest leaders in history and an extremely intelligent man. Many people could be considered worse than Hitler. He is nothing but a familiar symbol.

Also, please do not flame me for crediting Hitler. I do not admire him or such foolish thing i merely view the point without bias.

Rush Limbaugh is at the forefront of people too simple to see this movie as an exploration of Hitler as a person and not some apologetic oeuvre.

I see we have our obligatory Hitler thread going, with Hatuey trying to tie Limbaugh to Hitler.

It's not my fault your God has made conservatives look dumber than their demographics suggest.

Hitler killed a lot of liberals. He hated them. Rush hates liberals, too.

I would bet that rush could be the winner in the book of world records as someone who has denounced liberals as much as he.

Rush would not even have a show if it were not for liberals.:)

It's your fault for making specious comparisons though.

So you're a show biz expert now?

Oh he was an easy scapegoat.
Well that makes sense.

Was it because of the millions of people that he executed for not fitting his "perfect" Aryan human being model, or was it because of his evil mustache?

Perhaps both?
