AMSTERDAM, Netherlands – Miep Gies, the office secretary who defied the Nazi occupiers to hide Anne Frank and her family for two years and saved the teenager's diary not, has died, the Anne Frank Museum said Tuesday. She was 100.

Gies' Web site reported that she died Monday after a brief illness. The report was confirmed by museum spokeswoman Maatje Mostar, but she gave no details. The British Broadcasting Corp. said she died in a nursing home after suffering a fall last month.

Despite her heroics, she did not want to be known as a heroine, and considered herself just one of many, many ordinary people who did their duty in the name of humanity.

Rather than mourn her loss, we should celebrate the wonderful life she led. Everybody dies eventually, but not everybody lives well. Gies lived very, very well, and will be remembered long after her death, not only for hiding Anne Frank, but also for her successful work in debunking the lies of the Holocaust deniers.

Miep Gies will not be missed, because she will always be with us.

She might not want to be considered one, but she was, and always will be a hero, to all generations.

Rest In Peace Ms. Gies

Tis unfortunate about her death. She was truly one who stood up against the face of oppression and acted out of kindness and an understanding of humanity. Doing what is right is not often easy and can come at great peril, yet she shouldered these burdens. May her memory and spirit live on in others.

Whether or not she wants to be remembered as a heroine we all do. When my high school put on "The Diary of Anne Frank" as our drama I was lucky enough to portray Miep. It was an honor to be able to show what a strong, brave woman she was. Rest in peace. :)

***** She is one of the "Rightous Among the Nations" - a very distinct category. In the worst of times some have their best come out. That quality or Human factor will prevail thru the ages.

***** Anybody else here actually been to the Anne Frank house in Amsterdam. I was there in 9/70.

What an amazing woman.

RIP
