BBC News - CIA bomber was al-Qaeda triple agent, US media say

The suicide bomber who killed seven CIA agents in Afghanistan was an al-Qaeda triple agent, US media reports say.
He is said to have been a doctor from Jordan who was arrested by Jordanian intelligence a year ago.
He was then reportedly recruited by the Jordanians and CIA - who thought they had successfully turned him - and given a mission to find al-Qaeda leaders.
He is believed to have been working undercover in Afghanistan for weeks before detonating a bomb at a CIA base.
The attack at Forward Operating Base Chapman was the worst against US intelligence officials since the US embassy in Beirut was bombed in 1983.

My first BN thread and my first thread on DP, hope Im doing it right.

Why did the CIA believe they could trust this man? Were they desperate for someone like him or did he seriously lead them on? This exploded literally and is probably could bring about some strong change in how things work.

Unfortunate.

Why did the CIA believe they could trust this man?

Indeed, why? Say this Cat lives..his vest not igniting as Alhaji's did, and those CIA agents he killed instead capture him?

What would be your suggestion on the next moves by US intel/military?

They would probably torture him and rightfully so. This is a war gentlemen. Deaths and stuff like this is to be expected.

Apparently they didn't know he was an agent for al Qaeda.

Congressman Dutch Ruppersberger, a Democratic member of the House Intelligence Committee, told the BBC it was important to find out why the CIA had not discovered the bomber was an al-Qaeda agent.

You are fighting him because you are supposedly better than he is. You sink to his level and he wins.
There is no sinking down to in war. Its war. People are bound to get killed either by torture or any one of those things that can kill you like a gun, bomb, etc.

You did it just fine :)

I heard some about this yesterday, and as I understand it, turning agents is something we do try and do when we can. Usually it works, every so often it bites us in the ass. When it does work, we frequently get some incredibly valuable intel, which does save lives.

This ain't an argument with your spouse.
If you have to 'sink' to some level in order to communicate heatedly with your spouse, I think you have an odd idea of what relationships are about.

If my government, a Republic, tortures, then I am a torturer. I don't mind being a warrior (by proxy), but I do mind being a torturer. I mind it very much.

Noted, but don't care.

If my government, a Republic, tortures, then I am a torturer.

If it kills does trhat make you a killer. If it steals does that make you a thief? If it's corrupt, does that make you unjust. If it lies does that make you a liar? If it requires you to purchase health insurance, does that make it Constitutional?

You're about as wrong as you can get here, wanna try again, this time leave the emotion based nonsense out.

I don't mind being a warrior (by proxy), but I do mind being a torturer. I mind it very much.

Oh, I think the terrorists minded very much as well. I can imagine...no I really can't...as KSM is getting ready to have his 150th or so round of waterboarding boarding and we're unwinding the hoses to once again have a sinus cavity party with KSM...he's minding. And then singing like a canary.

I would jail him.

I dont see why they would torture him. You only torture people who have information you need. Someone like him would not necessarily know much.

Seeing as the cia torture memos came out stating there wasn't a single shred of evidence that has saved a single life garnered from any torture so far I don't know what your so proud about.

You guys seriously just like torture because it sounds hard. Whereas the truth of the matter is you are sick people who like torture and believe you have a justification for it. Torture is not effective, and does not impress me.

You may want to reread them.

A CIA spokesman confirmed to CNSNews.com today that the CIA stands by the factual assertions made here.

In the memo itself, the Justice Department’s Bradbury told the CIA’s Rossi: “Your office has informed us that the CIA believes that ‘the intelligence acquired from these interrogations has been a key reason why al Qa’ida has failed to launch a spectacular attack in the West since 11 September 2001.”

It is what it is.

I stand corrected, I was repeating some one else's talking point.

:duel I gotta say, hats off to Al Queda for this one.

Truly a home run.

Who agrees with me here on this point?

Surely its reasonable to give credit where its due in the matter of war.

Is his family fair game too?

Im not aware of this bomber harming them in any physical way but if you mean, its not fair to deceive them. You only have a point up to where you realise how normal it is for people doing dangerous and secretive tasks not to inform their family members.

Looks like Modern Warfare 2 had it right.
