Freed Guantánamo inmates are heading for Yemen to join al-Qaeda fight

Freed Guantánamo inmates are heading for Yemen to join al-Qaeda fight - Times Online
At least a dozen former Guantánamo Bay inmates have rejoined al-Qaeda to fight in Yemen, The Times has learnt,...

Six prisoners were returned to Yemen last month...
    Gitmo is so evil.
I guess we caused them to behave this way.

Didn't they know Amerika is a different place now?

Re: Freed Guantánamo inmates are heading for Yemen to join al-Qaeda fight

The US Government issued figures in May showing that 74 of the 530 detainees in Guantánamo were suspected or known to have returned to terrorist activity since their release. They included the commander of the Taleban in Helmand province, Mullah Zakir, whom the British Chief of the Defence Staff, Sir Jock Stirrup, called “a key and seemingly effective tactical leader”. Among others who returned to terrorism was Abdullah Saleh al-Ajmi, a Kuwaiti who killed six Iraqis in Mosul in 2008.

The number believed to have “returned to the fight” in the May 2009 estimate was double that of a US estimate from June 2008. US officials acknowledged that more detainees were known to have reoffended since, but the number has been classified.

“There is a historic trend and it continues. I will only say that we have said there is a trend, we are aware of it, there is no denying the trend and we are doing our best to deal with this reality,” Mr Morrell said.

Officials said that a higher proportion of those still being held were likely to return to terrorism because they were considered more of a security threat than those selected in the early stages of the release programme.

Chris Boucek, an expert on the region for the Carnegie Endowment think-tank, said that up-to-date figures for Saudi Arabia showed that 26 of the 120 Saudis released from Guantánamo were either in jail, wanted by the authorities or dead.
    That's just astonishing.

edit: For what it's worth, I'd bet that simply based on timing, most of those who have rejoined the fight were released by Bush, not Obama. Let's try to keep this thread focused on real policy differences, not imagined.

So we should repeat mistakes. That's your solution?

BTW, releasing more prisoners from Guantanamo is reality.

All that hope and change and they still want to kill us. Amazing.

When you want to only focus on the ones already released not the ones going to be released.

Seriously, do you even read what you post?

I have never seen someone defend Obama as much as you do and still claim they are conservative.

Read the freaking article for once.

Again, where the **** did you get that from what I wrote?

I believe that we should be far more discriminate in who we release. I believe we should have been doing that since day one. I think Bush was mistaken when he bowed to pressure to release detainees who should not have been released. I think Obama was mistaken when he did the same, and should change our policies going forward.

Is that simple enough for you?

That's what YOU wrote. You completely ignore the fact that the article is about releasing NEW prisoners when there is already a track record of them going back to terrorism.

Please for the love of God read the ARTICLE.

Holy ****. You actually criticized Obama. Good thing I'm sitting down.

Next time, don't brush over the SUBJECT of the OP which was the release of NEW prisoner when the track record sucks for releasing the ones earlier.

You were so engrossed in making sure we blame Bush for the others you overlooked that crucial point.

I mentioned the timing issue because the OP initially said something to the effect of "Look at what a jackass Obama is." I thought that was unnecessarily partisan and rather dumb because the bulk of these people were probably released before Obama took office. I added that line because I wanted this to be a thread about the actual issue, which I think is incredibly important and worthy of an intellectual discussion, rather than a "DERR OBAMA IS DUMB" "NO DERR BUSH IS DUMBER" thread. Now that I've explained this to you, I hope we can move past that.

Actually he never even mentioned the president.

That's probably the closest I'm going to get to an apology from you on this so I'll take it.

But bear in mind the subject of the article itself is about releasing new prisoners.

We already know what Bush did was stupid. The subject is about the current prisoners and whether they should be released and if your read the article, its already happened under Obama as well so the debate is about whether its a good idea to continue a failed policy.
